19 Things I Wish I Had Known Before 19
Olivia Jacques

I have made many mistakes throughout my 19 years of life. I have have also had many triumphs. There are many things I wish I had known before the age of 19.

So, here is a list of 19 things that I wish I had known before the age of 19. Hope this helps.

1. Don’t procrastinate

I am a hypocrite for saying this, but procrastination is my worst enemy. I have learned that it is very easy to avoid and it feels so much better when you aren’t cramming.

2. Be who you want to be

When you are comfortable with yourself life is so much better and you enjoy things a little more. This is hard in today’s world but very much worth it.

3. Time is too short

Don’t waste it. People come and go. Tell them you love them because you never know when the last time is the last time.

4. Reward yourself

After a long week of studying for a major exam or a stressful week at work, indulge in something you like.

5. How to cook simple meals

The thing I most regret not knowing before I came to college was not learning how to cook simple meals.

6. Manage time

I really thought I knew how to manage my time, but when I got to college I was lost. If I didn’t write things down and plan almost everything, I would forget. Out of sight, out of mind.

7. Say I love you extra

If you mean it, say it. No one ever regrets saying I love you extra, they just regret it when they don’t say it at all.

8. It’s OK to ask for help

Times get tough and people understand. Reach out for help.

9. How to budget money

Sure, I always kept track of my money before I came to college, but I never really thought about how broke one could get while you're there. No job means no money so every penny counts.

10. Take advantage of everything

You only regret the chances you didn’t take so do everything you can when you can.

11. Listen

Learn how to genuinely listen to people when they talk. A lot of people hear but few listen.

12. Do your best

Give 110% all the time. When you really don’t feel like it, that’s when it matters most. Don’t give up.

13. How to fail

IT’S OK. Everyone fails and if they tell you they haven’t then they’re lying. Failing is how you learn. Try, try again.

14. Things get better

There may be days when everything seems to be going wrong. Try to make the next day better. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. It'll all work out.

15. There is always someone who will be better

There is always going to be someone who is smarter or better looking and that’s OK. That’s how life goes. Be the best you.

16. How to have a good work ethic

This will come in handy in everything you do in life. Develop one when you’re young.

17. You don’t have to be a hard-ass all the time

It’s OK to have breakdowns, and it’s OK to cry.

18. Be adventurous

This is the time to find what you truly love to do and to have a lot of fun. Go out on a Tuesday night, who cares.

19. Enjoy the little things

With time ticking so fast, it’s easy to miss the small things in life. Always appreciate and enjoy even the littlest things in life, because sometimes they’re the best things.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
