19 Things You Need To Know About Any Writer
Ben Waardenburg

1. Writers are similar to magicians. They will perform for you but never reveal their secrets. For example, their inspiration.

2. We are shameless creatures that expose our vulnerabilities; not because we are brave, but to encourage others to do the same.

3. We often take risks because, even if it doesn't work out, at least we will have something to write about.

4. Our language consists of similes and metaphors.

5. Poets are not always abusers or alcoholics, but they sure do write about them.

6. They either have daddy or mommy issues. And if they are a really talented writer, they probably have both.

7. When it comes to dating, please notice the caution sign illuminated above me. Writing is my lethal weapon, so if you shatter my heart, my poetry will slam you so hard that it will break yours literally.

8. If you ever have the courage to date me, know that I am the epitome of a haunting. My heart is filled with ghost stories of the relationships I use to be in, so don't take offense when they escape through my pen. I am a poet, and writing is how I mourn the dead.

9. I turn the blood I have shed into ink and my tears into watercolor paint.

10. I know if something still hurts because it’s easy to write about.

11. With poetry, the applause is classified by snapping, not clapping. I do not know how to snap. I love the irony in that.

12. We are not all suffering souls that dip our pens in melancholy. Our pieces do not consistently derive from sadness, but from soil that can most effectively grow poetry. We sift beauty from pain, so even when given the most precious rose, we will always seek inspiration from the thorns.

13. We have visited both Hell and Heaven.

14. Reciting poetry is the second best thing I can do with my tongue.

15. On those days I feel like I am drowning, I do not worry. Instead, I admire the ocean floor around me.

16. We can make a love letter sound like a suicide note.

17. Writing is out dirty mistress. So when we say we are busy, what we really mean is we are DOING poetry!

18. For the love of God, we do not start every poem with "roses are red, violets are blue." In our poems, we BURN the flowers.

19. We wish to be remembered. When our bodies have decayed, our future generation will not be able to scrape our words from our bones, so instead, we fossilize them on paper, in bathroom stalls, graffiti on brick walls. We were born to be heard, so listen.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
