19 Things I Learned From my 85-Year-Old Grandpa About Life
Jennifer VerMeulen

They say "with age comes wisdom." Here are 19 things I learned from my 85-year-old grandpa about life.

1. "Make your bed every morning. I learned this through a Naval officer way back when. Get your fanny out of bed, even if you don't want to and start your day right by making the damn thing."

2. "A job worth doing is worth doing well. If you don't have the time to do it right the first time, you definitely don't have time to do it over."

3. "You can always tell a woman, but you can't tell her much. Your grandmother proved this to be true too many times to count. Accept it."

4. "Just keep moving. We get older you know, but the second you start sitting still, that's when age catches up with you."

5. "There's no substitute for experience."

6. "No one can do it exactly the way you want it done. If you want something done right, learn how to do it yourself."

7. "If you're uncertain, don't be afraid to ask. Two heads are sometimes better than one."

8. "To error is to be human... Had to tell your Uncle Tripp this far too often. You just always have to remember not everyone is perfect and we all make mistakes."

9. "Patience is a virtue. Your Uncle Scott doesn't wait for anything, he just does it. He never stops. Never a dull moment."

10. "Respect your elders. They know a whole hell of a lot.. Goes with the experience thing, ya know. It's your responsibility is to show your gratitude."

11. "Avoid "the devil made me do it"."

12. "Always be curtious, kind and patient."

13. "And always respect authority. I used to wack your uncles' and mothers' heads together just to show em who's boss, and they turned out alright. Police officers, teachers, parents (no matter how old you are), the whole lot of em. They all deserve your respect."

14. "Your generation has been dislodged from the basic learnings of The Constitution Of The United States Of America. I think your generation should be compelled to read the Constitution start to finish by the time they finish the 8th grade, but unfortunately many of your generation are simply uninterested. You just encourage your friends to read it for now, and we'll work on the rest of your generation later."

15. "If all else fails, take two and hit to right. Ya know, like baseball. Take two pitches then hit to right field. Might not be the best option for scoring, but avoid striking out at all costs. You gotta work with what you've got."

16. "Vote for Trump."

17. "If at first you don't succeed, try and try again. That's an oldie, but a goodie."

18. "Discretion is a better part of valor. Be humble."

19. "Don't be too serious. You have to laugh in life. It keeps your mind young."

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
