18 Things I've Learned From Longwood University
Katelynn Deal

Being a Longwood University student is a special and unique opportunity. Throughout the first couple of years, I've learned a lot. From silly lessons to moral reminders, Longwood has already equipped me with the skills to succeed in life. More importantly, though, it has shown me how to live happily.

Here are 18 things that being a Longwood student has taught me:

1. Everything happens for a reason

Who you live with, who you meet, the grades you get, the professors you choose, the schedule you end up having, the organizations you join, the experiences you go through: it all happens for a reason.

God's plan is always in the works.

2. Traditions are important

Traditions are what make the world go 'round. Longwood has several, and I love all of them.

3. Time Management

Learning what to do and when to do it is very important. Longwood has taught me creating to-do lists is essential. So, yeah, maybe my target planner is covered in highlighters and blue pen, but it gets me through each day.

4. Communication

Longwood has taught me that communication is very important. Whether it's with friends, family, or professors, it's essential.

5. Love is possible

Freshman year, I was lucky enough to meet my boyfriend; he was just across the hall from me in Curry. Longwood has taught me that real love is possible. I've even found this in several of my friends.

6. Opportunity is at every corner

Longwood has taught me that, on its campus, an opportunity is always knocking. And if it's not knocking, you can find it in more ways than one.

7. Patience and grace

You go through things in college. Longwood has taught me patience and how to, for the most part, have grace when things get tough.

8. Quarters are your best friend

I've learned that a few measly quarters can determine whether or no I'll be able to do laundry or go to Uptown Cafe. So, I've started a quarter collection.

9. Support systems exist beyond friends and family

Professors and other faculty members are there for you and genuinely care.

10. Small schools do it better

Need I say more?

11. Unusual situations are embraced

I once walked across campus. I looked like a hobo, I was carrying a gallon of milk, and I was eating cereal out of the box. I was met with understanding smiles.

12. How to be a successful future leader

Creating citizen leaders is something Longwood prides itself on. Just in my class alone, I see the success and progress Longwood is making.

13. The library becomes your third home

There's your actual home, your dorm or apartment, and then the library. You'll be in the library 82% of the time.

14 Bonus Dollars are essential for survival

Without them, I would be eating food I get out the drop and swap.

Not really, but Longwood students know what I mean.

15. Planning

I've learned that planning things beforehand is very important.

16. The history of Farmville

The Civil War. The Civil Rights Movement. And now, the Vice Presidental Debate. Farmville's history is rich and I love learning about it.

17. Coffee addiction is very real

Yep.

18. Home is where the Rotunda is

We really are Lancers for life.

Longwood has been my home away from home for the last two years, and I am grateful for all that is has taught me. I cannot wait to see what else I'll learn as I continue my journey.

Thank you, Longwood University, for being everything that I knew you would be.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
