18 Things I Learned At 18

My letter to you.

18 Things I Learned At 18

18 tips and reminders to anyone who's taking a ride on the roller coaster of life.

1. Be kind to everyone, even if they're not kind to you.

Unless you just happen to know everything about everyone, you never know what the other person is going through. As Selena Gomez once said, "Kill Em With Kindness."

2. It's OK to not know what you want.

This one goes out to all of my indecisive friends out there. I just want to let you know that it's OK to be unsure about the decisions you need to make. Whether it's picking what cereal you should eat for breakfast or what you want to major in. Just take a deep breath and time will help you answer your questions.

3. Don't be afraid to try new things.

If I told my 14 year-old self that by the time I was 18, I would become one of the captains for my high school swim team, have walked on the outside of CN Tower's roof 1,168 feet above ground, and then go on to write articles for a successful writing community, I would've called myself crazy. I know that the idea of stepping out of your comfort zone can be really nerve-racking, but I guarantee you that you'll end up thanking yourself when you do. I wouldn't want you to look back in those moments wishing you took the chance to do what you wanted.

4. Karma is real.

What goes around, comes around.

5. You don't belong to anyone but yourself.

If you don't want to do it, don't. Don't let anyone tell you what you can or can't do, they don't own you. Only you know what's best for you.

6. Take care of yourself, mentally and physically.

Eat your fruits and veggies. Go out with your friends. Treat yourself with a nice bubble bath. Listen to your favorite songs. Go to the gym. Not a gym person? Go pokemon hunting or exploring, anything to get your step count up.

7. Your physical beauty doesn't define you.

Stop comparing yourself to the covers on the magazine stands. Your weight doesn't define your beauty or character. Everyone's looks are going to fade away as we get older, but our personalities are here to stay.

8. People are going to come and go.

People are going to change and that's OK. Just don't hold on to the bad ones. Surround yourself with good people.

9. Turn the negatives into a positive.

For example:

"How do you say your name?"

Rhiannon.

"So Rihanne."

No, RHIANNON.

"Rihanna?"

Yes.

10. Travel, travel, TRAVEL.

Push your boundaries, expand your mind, learn about your cultures, try different dishes, meet new people, create new memories.

11. Never take anything for granted.

Don't take life for granted. Don't take dogs for granted. Don't take chicken tenders for granted. Don't take your family for granted. Don't take coco puffs for granted. Don't take your friends for granted. Don't take your privileges for granted. Don't take Derek Shepherd for granted. Don't take home cooked meals for granted.

12. You'll have your heart broken multiple times.

Friends, family, boys, Derek Shepherd, Lexi Grey, Mark Sloan, etc.

13. Love yourself.

At the end of the day, you're your own best friend.

14. Spotify and Netflix are worth the money.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I could freely listen to my favorite songs over and over again, or skipping around to different playlists without having to listen to those annoying commercials.

Netflix is just common sense.

15. America will make you want to pull your hair out sometimes, but don't do it.

Trump vs. Hilary.

Self explanatory.

16. Stay open minded.

You're going to come across people that'll disagree with your thoughts and beliefs. Don't belittle their opinions just cause they don't agree with you. You can either respectfully educate them on why you believe in what you believe or just simply nod your head and walk away.

17. Carbs are life.

Bread. Pasta. Rice. Potatoes. Must I go on?

18. Life is short.

I know, I know, I couldn't have ended it off any cheesier but it's true. We're not guaranteed tomorrow. Appreciate all the big and little things about life. Tell the people you love that you appreciate and love them as much as you can. You only have one chance at life, go out and live it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
