17 Thoughts I Had While Seeing My Favorite Broadway Musical

I spent my high school years as the member of an awesome choir program, and as a result spent countless hours listening to, learning and performing songs from Broadway musicals. There is a Broadway song for every mood and moment and for that reason, I can never seem to stop listening. From Avenue Q, a parody of Sesame Street, to Hamilton, a rap-heavy show about our founding fathers, to more classic shows like Les Miserables and Phantom of the Opera, there is a musical for everyone. My choir director instilled a love for the show Wicked, and so for my 18th birthday, all I wanted to do was to see the traveling company when they came to Houston. Luckily, my grandparents granted my wish. I got to see Wicked on stage for the second time, sitting only eight rows from the stage.

I looked forward to the show for the weeks. It lived up to my every expectation, and it's easy to see why the show is so Popular. Here are 17 thoughts I had before, during and after seeing my favorite musical.

1. What am I supposed to wear to something I've been looking forward to for months?!

Would is be cheesy to wear my Wicked shirt, from the last time I went and saw Wicked, to go and see Wicked in a different city? Yes? Oh. Okay.

2. Is listening to the Wicked soundtrack on the way to see Wicked too cheesy, even for me?

The answer is no. Here family, listen to the newest rendition of Defying Gravity at the top of my lungs.

3. OOOOOHHHH! The merchandise table! Look how pretty everything is!

Let's go check it out. There's the price list. Oh... Um, maybe I don't need that $40 tank top.

4. THE STAGE. THE STAGE IS SO AWESOME.

There is so much going on! There are a dragon and stairs and gears and OOOOHHH LOOK AT THE LIGHTS. And there's a map of all of Oz!

5. Elphaba is my spirit animal. Galinda is also my spirit animal.

Both of these awesome characters are completely and totally themselves. Elphaba has no fear or care about what anyone else may think of her and dances to the beat of her own drum (no really, there's a scene where she walks out in the middle of a crowded party and starts dancing on her own!) In the beginning many may find Galinda to be kind of a brat, but you eventually fall in love with her and her charm.

6. The actor playing Fiyero has been onstage for two minutes, but I've already decided I'm going to marry him.

I texted my mom during intermission and informed her of this fact. He was tall, sandy-haired and has one of the most beautiful male voices I had ever heard. It was hard not to fall in love.

7. Defying Gravity is the most moving song ever.

A song about being true to yourself and following your heart -- just what every girl needs in her life. I thought it was moving to listen to the original cast recording, then I watched a live actress sing her heart out alongside some of the most incredible technical arrangements I've ever seen. Defying Gravity is definitely a song for the ages.

8. Elphie, don't you know that Glinda loves you?!

You're not alone, honey! Your friend loves you and misses you terribly! If only you would go back to her!

9. Fiyero and Elphaba are the cutest: I ship them so hard.

When Fiyero and Elphaba finally admit their feelings for each other in act two, the entire audience let out a sigh of happy relief. After they spend a night together in the woods, you want nothing more than for them to be able to be happy together forever.

10. Did she just say, "and your little dog too!"?

Late in the second act, you slowly begin to realize how the story of Elphaba and Glinda becomes the story of Dorothy and her gang of friends in The Wizard of Oz. All of the pieces fall into place and you realize neither story could take place without the other.

11. Oh no, that's the opening chord of For Good. You will not cry, this time, Sarah.

My school choir closed our big fall show with For Good every year. The song holds a special place in all of our hearts and it's hard to hear it without becoming emotional.

12. I lied. I'm crying. This song is actually the most moving song ever (sorry, Defying Gravity.)

For Good is a song where two women sing to each other about what it is like to find someone who has changed your life; to find someone who will be a piece of you forever. Having recently graduated high school, the song has an even deeper meaning to me.

13. Why can't musicals be like concerts, where it is perfectly acceptable to sing along at the top of your lungs?

I know every note and every rest to each of these songs. Sitting here and listening quietly is almost painful.

14. It's over?! Already?! It only just started!

It's over, but now I get to relive the perfection I just witnessed over and over and over again in my mind.

15. Oh, the merchandise table is still there!

Those shirts are so pretty! If I just buy one and wear it a lot, it'll be worth the $40 I spend one it, right? I'm buying it.

16. Now I get to blast the soundtrack on the way home!

I know all the words, now my family needs to learn them, too!

17. It's only been two days and I miss it already.

Post-show depression is very real.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
