Living with a host mother/family is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in another culture, but it also requires a lot of adaptation. Whether it's just you and your señora, or you're living with an entire family, you've probably experienced these challenges at some point during your time abroad:
1. Your host mom isn’t your actual mom, but you still feel like she judges you when you say you’re going out…..again….
Only slightly, but it still hurts. Isn't this supposed to be a no judgement zone?
2. You always have to keep everything in order because your host mom is obsessed with cleanliness.
Doing laundry once a week is normal. Twice a week is a little much. Three times a week is excessive. But hey, at least my American parents will be happy that I can't be a slob anymore.
3. Your host mom gets annoyed at you if you forget to wear your house slippers.
Lo siento, mamá. It won't happen again.
3. You wish you had a pet to cuddle with at night.
4. You still can’t pronounce your street name.
5. Family members have little patience for your crappy Spanish accent.
6. Your host mom gets personally offended when you don’t finish your meal, even though she gives you enough food to feed a small village.
7. Waiting until 9 p.m. to eat is pure torture.
8. You feel weird knowing that your host mom washes your underwear when you barely know each other.
9. Your inconsistent Spanish skills fuel a lot of miscommunication.
What did she say? Regalo? Bocadillo? Hmm...No sé.
10. The language barrier makes it impossible to have casual small talk.
11. The food you eat is sometimes questionable.
Why is this meat black? Is this REALLY chicken?
12. And sometimes you just really miss greasy American food.
I’m just tryna get a slice of New York pizza.
13. Your host mom's accent is IMPOSSIBLE to understand, so you just nod and say "sÃ" regardless of the context.
14. Her social life is better than yours.
She goes to Bingo every week night while you're doing your tarea.
15. You have trouble understanding your family members when they try to speak to you in English.
16. Your señora is very sassy.
You used to think she was always angry, but you've realized that it's just the way she talks.
While your relationship with your host mom may be very different from the relationship you have with your American mother, you're still grateful for all she has given you.
