15 Ways Life Away From Home Can Be Actually Rewarding

If we were meant to stay in one place, we would have roots instead of feet.

As you grow up, you often have to leave your home and start a new phase of your life. It doesn't matter if you are just going to study in a school or a college or starting a new job in a different city altogether. Trust me, I know what I am talking about because I have stayed away from home for about 10 years of my life now.

It can be exhilarating but downright scary too and while you might often feel homesick, there are many bright spots to look forward to.

1. PARTY All Night!

YES! The best thing about staying away from home is that you can party like never before. Dance all night, get drunk, make out with random strangers. No one to scold you or berate you in the morning when it is all over!

2. A chance to reinvent yourself and become the person you always wanted to be.

I can't even tell you how many times I have dreamt of being this sophisticated woman who is smart and confident but every time I even tried to do it, my family or friends would end up ruining it for me. Can you imagine? Going off to a nice restaurant all decked up and then hear your parents or friends say, "What the hell happened to your hair?" "Why are you wearing those heels? You know you are just going to fall down on your face."

Yeah, well, thanks guys for ruining any chance of a possibly nice encounter with a handsome stranger.

3. Learn new things about yourself and embrace it willingly.

I love reading books and watching movies but what I love even more is eating and sleeping. In fact, I didn't even realize my true capacity of eating until I left the sanctity of my home. At least now I can say that I can easily finish off food for two people without batting an eye. *burps* Or sleep for an entire day. *snores*

4. You become independent and make your parents proud of your adult decisions.

Yessss! Finally, the moment arrives when your parents become proud of how you have been handling your business. They don't need to know that you are broke AF and crashing on your friend's couch. Shush.

5. No one to ask you questions incessantly about your whereabouts anymore

"Where are you?", "When are you returning home?", "Who are you with?", "Why are you out so late?". Ugh! Relax, guys. I am a grown-up, I can take care of myself. I am sure that most of us have experienced this at some or the other point in our lives which is why staying away from home can be such a relief and a welcome change. Ain't I right?

6. You learn how to manage your budget and household chores, even if it is completely cringeworthy.

Nope. Never ever I imagined washing my own dishes at home. In fact, the mere idea seemed so ludicrous, but once you have your own house, you got to wash your dishes and clean if you want to eat. Even if you would rather wish to die than do it. Welcome to adulthood guys, it sucks.

7. This is the time you can stay with your Best Friends and have epic fun

All of us have dreamt of living with our best friend and then having epic adventures. Well, this is the time to do it. Now, you can have all those late night drives and gossip sessions and can do crazy things which you always promised to do together! Yay!

8. You can impress the boy/girl you like without a constantly dreading your parents are going to embarrass you.

Because let's face it, we are entirely capable of doing it ourselves. So, why get your family involved in the middle of it, right?

9. You learn the importance of parents and good home-cooked food.

It is only when you are away you realize how much you actually miss your parents and your home. Your safe and cozy room. The amazing home-cooked food. Aah! You miss it all and start appreciating what you have.

10. Moving away gives you a chance to experiment with your life

And your hair. And face. And everything you ever wanted to change. Wanted to die your color violet or red? This is probably the best time to do it! Because there is no one to tell you 'No' anymore. You are the master of your own life. Heehahaha.

11. It is also a good way to develop your personality and become the awesome person that you were meant to be

Of course, we are already awesome but that doesn't mean we can't be LEGEN-wait for it-ARY!

LEGENDARY! Am I right or am I righttt?

12. You have the freedom to wear whatever you want or go NUDE

Yessss! You can roam around in your underwear, a wedding dress, or nothing at all! It is up to you!

13. This is a chance for you to get a taste of the adulthood and you realize it is not all that it was cracked up to be.

Welcome to your first phase of Adulthood! You are not going to like it and are probably going to cuss a lot. But hey, you have some amazing friends to cuss along with!

14. You find amazing people to love and support you apart from your blood relatives

Yep, that's right! You don't have to be just loved by your Aunt Judy anymore. You are a grown up with like-minded friends who are your family now and will go to any lengths to help you out. Short of committing a murder, I guess?

15. Aaaaaand, you can do whatever the hell you want! Dobby has no master anymore! Dobby is a free elf.

That elusive feeling of freedom. Yes! It feels great and awesome and mind-blowing, doesn't it?

Let's face it! Staying away from home is not only fun but quite helpful too and helps us grow into the delightful human beings that we are supposed to be (at least most of the times). So, make the most of it and don't forget to make your parents proud too!

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
