There are things you just get if you've done theater before. No one outside of theater really understands how much effort it takes to learn lines and blocking and create a character good enough to make you, and more importantly your director, happy. Here are 15 things theater people can relate to.
1. Knowing that you sucked at auditions, and worrying that you won't get cast.
There's no worse feeling than thinking you're not going to get into a show, especially one you really want to be cast in.
2. All of the emotions you go through when you see your name on the cast list.
Because there's nothing better than seeing your name listed under your desired role... or any role, for that matter.
3. When people ask which shows you've been in, and you draw a blank.
Look, it's hard to remember all of those shows and despite what people may think, you're actually not good under pressure so you just kind of say, "Um, there was the one with the French Revolution?"
4. When your on-stage love interest is super cute.
OK, look, this scene is great, but when is the kissing scene?
5. When someone touches your props, even though they're not supposed to do that.
You feel like you have to bring that prop with you everywhere now, because your director will literally kill you if you don't have it.
6. When you come home from rehearsal.
You have to shower and take care of all of your stupid responsibilities, but you're just... so... tired.
7. When you leave rehearsal and it's still daylight.
Look, time passes differently in the theater, and it's shocking when you leave the theater and the sun is still out.
8. When someone tries to give you backstage directing.
Who died and made you director?
9. When you have to apologize to your director for not being in character.
Those are the worst moments of rehearsal.
10. When it's finally opening night!
You've worked for months on this show, and you just can't believe there will be real people in the audience tonight, not just your director silently (or not-so-silently) judging you.
11. When you mess up a line during the show and just kind of go with it.
Your cast mate really has no choice but to go with it, either.
12. When someone onstage with you forgets his or her line, and improvs.
*Panic intensifies*
13. When someone asks if acting comes naturally to you.
Like, really hard.
14. When the show is done and you just feel... awesome.
Hell yeah.
15. And then when you see a recording of the show...
"I wasn't that bad, was I?"
