15 Things I've Learned During My Year Of Sophomore Slump
Alicia Burrell

Another year of stress, fun, lack of sleep, and absurd inside jokes is coming to an end.

Sophomore year has really taught me that sophomore slump is real. I am disillusioned with college, the complete fun and newness is gone, and I would rather sleep than do anything else. With that being said, I still can't believe I am half way through college. I can't wait to be done, but I also want to stay in this time period forever.

Here are 15 things I've learned this year.

1. Things don't always go according to plan.

I've changed my minor, study abroad plans, and internship plans.

2. People are more important than papers.

It's important to have fun and focus on the people around you. The papers will always be there, people won't.

3. You will end up where you are supposed to be.

I learned this lesson when ending up at USC for college, but I've slowly been relearning it since April marked two years of committing to USC.

4. Do what makes you happy.

I know this is advice you've probably received for a long time. But in college it's true. If you aren't happy about something or feel inclined to do something, then don't.

5. You are important.

Just like people are more important than papers, you are as well. As college students, we are taught to put school before anything else, but our wellbeing matters. Unless we are feeling okay, we can't get work done.

6. We all need a change of scenery.

One week in April, I spent the whole week cooped up inside writing papers. By the time I needed to start my last paper, I decided to ditch some of my responsibilities and go to the beach. I needed a change of scenery to write my paper and regain my sanity.

7. It's okay to set boundaries.

Whether you are in a club that demands too much of your time or even a relationship that doesn't respect certain things, your boundaries are important and it's okay to set them.

8. It's vital to have friends that will fight for you.

We all need those friends who will fight for you when you can't fight for yourself.

9. You will survive.

Even when it seems like we can't write those five papers all due the same week, we get it done anyway. We are warriors.

10. Speak your mind.

Your voice matters and your opinions do as well. Hiding them for the convenience of others, won't help you or them.

11. It's okay to still be healing.

Whether you are healing from a romantic relationship, friendship, or grief; it's perfectly fine to take your time.

12. Time is precious.

Your time is so valuable, so fill it with things that make you happy. I know that school doesn't always, but fill it with people and organizations that you love.

13. It's okay to ask the big questions.

Each season brings change and questions about life. It's okay to ask the big questions about who you are, what you want, or why this world is the way it is.

14. Taking the time to understand someone is everything.

A lot of the strife and feelings of not being enough in this world is because no one took the time to understand someone. Be the person that takes the time to understand and let someone know they are seen.

15. Don't rush college.

College is the only time in our lives where we pay to be kids and learn what makes us happy. We are going to be adults soon enough, so don't rush college. Take this time to find your passions, dislikes, and to do something stupid.

College is a roller coaster of a time and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Cheers to two more years.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
