It's totally true that distance makes the heart grow fonder, and the time I've spent so far at college has certainly made me miss my family, especially my mom. But not only that, being away from my mom and having to be more of an adult in this college atmosphere has proven to me that I am becoming my mom in more ways than I would have expected (and that's a great thing)! You may think you're much different from your mother, but sooner or later, you will probably experience some of these "OMG I'm turning into my mom" moments.
1. You check your email frequently
All of a sudden, you're sending emails and checking your emails multiple times a day like an actual functioning adult.
2. You are the master of laundry
You find yourself teaching the people who live in your dorm what a "delicate cycle" means or how it is so crucial to remove the lint in the dryer before starting your load.
3. You like the same shows
I was never able to jump on the "Gilmore Girls" bandwagon in high school, but this year I am suddenly addicted. Probably because this iconic mother-daughter duo reminds me of my mom.
4. The "text me when you get home safe" text
This is probably the ultimate "mom text" to send, but it's so important to me that I make sure my friends got home safe after a night out. It's a classic mom move because it shows how much you care.
5. You get super excited about deals and coupons
College has made me super glad that my mom taught me how to properly shop because finding those sales and using those coupons is essential for staying financially stable in college.
6. Using a calendar to plan your life
My mom's calendar used to give me severe headaches with the lack of free space that was on it. Yet I've only been at college a few weeks and my calendar already looks just as insane. Being busy is something my mom rocks at, and I'm glad I grew up learning from her because, well, in college there's no such thing as downtime.
7. You find yourself giving life advice to your siblings
Am I older than my brothers? No. Do I have more wisdom and age experience to be giving them advice about life? No. Yet, I still find myself calling them to give them advice and to see how they're doing because I love them and want the best for them, just like my mom does.
8. The Crybaby Syndrome
While I used to make fun of my mom for crying at the littlest things, I now find myself tearing up at something the priest said in the homily at Church, or at a heartwarming video I watched online. What is happening to me?
9. You enjoy giving gifts
This is an area that my mom has always rocked at, and, as I'm getting older, I get so much more joy out of making others happy by finding or creating the perfect gift.
10. You realize you have started giving your friends the advice she gave you
You have always valued your mom's advice because it has a perfect track record for getting you through any tough situation. Then, one day, you find yourself recycling her words of wisdom when your friends need your advice.
11. You're tired by 8 PM
Rally?? Why does everyone always want to rally? I did so much today and I didn't even get a nap.
12. Your cleaning habits are out of control
An organized life is a happy life, and that is something I know my mother lives by. My life is crazy enough in college, the last thing I need is a messy dorm room to add to my craziness.
13. You're no longer "hip" with the times
How did this happen to me?? Nothing makes me feel older than having to look up a "hip" phrase on Urban Dictionary because I have never freaking heard it before.
14. You bring a sweater and/or coat with you at all times
I don't know if it's the Michigan winters already kicking in, but I am suddenly ALWAYS COLD. Thank God my mom mailed me my Patagonia last week!
