15 Ridiculous Things You Only Do And Know When You're In A Fandom
Ashley Heiderstadt

Have you ever been in a fandom? It may have been when you were 12 when the Jonas Brothers were huge, or you may even be in one now. Today, being in a fandom isn't just about sitting in your room with a celebrity poster on your wall while listening to their greatest hits.

No, today you can connect with people who are in the same fandom, sharing a common factor with you — their love of a certain celebrity. There are group chats, fan accounts on social media, and although it isn't really something to be proud of because of how ridiculous they can be fanfictions.

Here are just a couple of things you'll understand if you're in or were ever in a fandom.

1. Post-Concert Depression (PCD)

Giphy.com

Most big fandoms are usually for musicians. If you have ever gone to a concert for your favorite artist or band, you'll know exactly how this feels. You find yourself watching your low-quality videos of the concert, remembering how loud the screams were and the moments the artist told the crowd to sing a part for them. It could come when you're still at the concert, watching them leave the stage or when you're lying in bed one morning.

2. Internet friends

It's more likely you'll make internet friends if you're in a fandom than if you aren't. Finding them can be difficult, especially if you're of the many that doesn't have a fan account, but once you find them, you can never get rid of them. They're the ones sending you new photos of the band or artist.

3. Scolding Friends/ Family

Are you really in a fandom if your friends and family haven't scolded you for it? At first, you were annoyed by it, but now that you're used to it, you think it's hilarious how bothered they are by your obsession.

4. No Sleep

When it comes to sleep, there is no such thing in a fandom- especially when there's an album due to come out or concert tickets to go on sale. If you do get sleep, you always feel like you'll miss out on something as if the musician or band will drop a single or a music video while you're catching zzz's

5. You're in love with someone you've never met

It may sound odd, but if you're in a fandom for quite a while you seem to fall in love with someone from the band or the musician. You know that you can't have said person but it just makes you want them even more. Don't even think about ever looking at boys/girls the same way because your expectations are set at an all-time high when you fall for someone famous.

6. You've cried over the musician/band...Multiple times

It's very very ridiculous but then again what aspect isn't ridiculous about a fandom. It could be just from a random memory, from an interview or you're watching concert videos. Maybe the musician changed a note when singing live from the studio version. We've all been there.

7. The Slang

You probably know what someone means when someone types a random array of letters like"dkjdglnlfkndvnrs" meaning that they're so excited that they can't form real sentences. If new pictures come out and they're really good and someone says "I'm"- meaning they don't even know what to say because they're completely speechless-you get what they're trying to say.

8. Stan (noun/verb)

I would have put this in with the slang but it deserves it's own category. A "stan" (noun) is a fan who is a step above what a normal fan is. To "stan" (verb), is to like a musician or band more than the average fan. "Stanning" is a bit more obsessive per se and you definitely do not want to mess with a stan of any fandoms.

9. The memes

Everyone loves a good meme but seeing memes of the person/ people you "stan" are absolutely hilarious and you realize how funny the people in your fandom are.

10. Fan-fiction

Most people think of fan fiction as being written by 12-year-old girls who have nothing better to do- wanting to write short stories about that cute boy who can sing. Oddly enough, most fan-fiction is being written by adults or teenagers. It's weird to think about but someone's gotta do it.

11. Triggers

When you're in a store or restaurant and one of their songs comes on, you immediately look up. Yes, I know the exact feeling. You start to feel excited and flustered. Or if someone says something that the musician may have said and you just kind of wanna cry thinking about it.

12. Staying Calm

With triggers, you learn to stay calm in public. It may be hard at first but if your friend starts talking about their new song or if they play it, remember to just breathe and not throw a fangirl/ fanboy fit. If you hear their songs in public, if you can't control it, hide in the bathroom or the dressing room.

13. Ships

I could have also put this with the slang but it too needed its own special category. Ship, short for relationship, is a term used in fandoms when they mutually agree that two people in the same band would look cute together as a couple. This is seen in many fan-fiction and you can also find fan art that may have been photoshopped or the picture was taken of the two people. When a ship is made, their two names are put together to be made into one- or their "ship name".

14. The amount of time spent on them

I cannot even begin to count how much time that I have wasted on stupid things like watching youtube videos, reading articles, over-analyzing things, crying, listening to their songs, watching the music videos, and so on.

15. Merch

Merchandise — or merch for short- is probably one of the most overpriced things money can buy, but to show your love, you buy it nonetheless. It's kind of a necessity when it comes to being in a fandom and you're proud to show your support.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
