Chick flicks are insightful. Through them, one can learn countless astute cultural generalizations. Here are just 15 of them:
1. A woman’s main objective in life is finding a good man; her occupation is just a distraction from that.
2. A man’s main objective is his occupation; finding a woman is a distraction.
3. A woman’s best friend’s singular role is to provide wine and relationship advice.
4. Men are assholes (unless, of course, they suddenly aren’t).
5. Women relentlessly jump to conclusions.
6. Men do not have emotions. That is, until they lose that one special girl...
7. No relationship conversation can exist between a man and woman unless it is romantic or sexual.
8. A romantic relationship probably cannot take place unless at least one of the two people is from New York and/or is a businessperson.
9. If you have a bad first impression with someone, you can expect to fall in love with them by the week's end.
10. Communication skills do not exist.
11. A small miscommunication or assumption should always be a reason to abruptly end a relationship.
12. Always operate off of assumptions. Especially if you’re a woman.
13. Attractive people are paired with other attractive people.
14. Unattractive people are hopelessly devoid of intimate relationship.
15. Traumatic events in your life are only plot devices; they have no true impact on your character.
A dramatic list? Perhaps. But aren't these types of movies rather dramatic, too? Maybe they aren't actively intending to teach these lessons, but it's still a glimpse into our culture.
