No matter where you find yourself working, every cashier faces the same universal problems day-in and day-out on the clock. Customer service is always an adventure, from wild holiday rushes to the picky regular customers you see almost every day. It's no secret we all share similar struggles on a daily basis when working in retail. Here's just a few things everyone working behind a register feels at one point or another.
"1. Are you open?"
Is there any other reason why I'd be standing here like this?
2. People who talk on the phone while you ring them up:
Nothing is ruder than having a full-fledged conversation on the phone right in front of your cashier. At least show us a little respect.
3. Repeating the same script to customers all day, every day:
We'll do just about anything you ask us to do. Press enough buttons and you'll see us blow a fuse!
4. "Oh wait I forgot one thing I'll be right back!"
*comes back with 4 things in their hands* Sorry, forgot a couple of other things too!
5. "If it doesn't scan, then it's free, right?"
Asking that question just makes us want to give it to you even less.
6. When you open your drawer and the customer says, "Oh wait I have change!"
Mental math under high stress situations is not as easy as you might think. Your patience is appreciated.
7. When customers aren't paying attention:
All we ask is for 2 minutes of attention. We know you're busy, but we are too.
8. When customers take their frustrations out on you:
Sometimes you can't please a person, no matter how hard you try.
9. Listening to the same playlist every single day
Sometimes standing in silence sounds better than hearing "Fireflies" by Owl City for the 5,000th time.
10. When customers come in 2 minutes before closing:
The only thing between me and my bed is you and your order.
11. When you have half of the customer's order bagged:
*unbags 3 bags of groceries and puts them into different bags*
12. People who bring more than the item limit in the express lane:
Go right ahead, hold up my line. It's alright. You're not making anyone's lives more complicated.
13. Taking someone's money after they sneeze or cough on their hands:
Hand sanitizer is a cashier's most valuable possession.
14. Waiting for the end of your shift like:
15 minutes feels like an hour at the end of a long work
15. Closing one night and then opening the next:
No sleep for the weary.
