15 Biggest Lies Told About College
Catherine Hake

Going into college you have all these expectations. Sometimes college meets those expectations and sometimes they don't. People will tell you about their college experience, so you that to get it in your head that your experience will be similar to their, but you quickly find out that they were either misguided or totally lying. Sometimes it could even be your professors that are the ones lying to you. Either way, you'll come to find out that college is basically just one big lie, and here are just a few of them.

1. You'll need to purchase the book for this class.

Freshmen year I purchased every single book that was listed for my classes, and I only used one.

2. If you don't read the chapters, you'll fail the test.

Most professors post reviews online on what you need to know, or if you're lucky, all your tests in that class will be online, aka open book.

3. You have so much down time in college.

The very little down time I have is spent napping or crying over everything I need to get done.

4. Having a roommate is part of the college experience.

I don't have a roommate and my college experience is just fine.

5. Taking notes is very important.

Literally all my teachers post their Powerpoints of their lectures online.

6. It's on the syllabus.

Please point out exactly where on the syllabus this information is located!!!

7. Attendance is mandatory.

While in some cases the professors exactly do take attendance (RIP), most of the time you can get away with missing a few classes without serious repercussions.

8. If you take a year off of school you won't go back.

Tell this to my mom who took more than a year off school and is now working on her Doctorate!

9. If you join a sorority or frat they'll haze you.

While there are a few incidences of hazing, which is 100% not okay, a lot of sororities and fraternities have a no hazing policy.

10. This is going to help you in the real world.

Please tell me how this random film class my counselor put me in will help me later in life.

11. You're going to gain the freshmen 15.

As long as you have self control and occasionally work out, you'll be totally fine.

12. College is the most important thing that's going to happen for your career.

My retail job is just as important for my fashion design degree as my classes are.

13. You're going to have midterms in all your classes.

I have yet to take an actual midterm test.

14. You're going to be using the library so much during your time in college.

It's my sophomore year and I literally just set foot in the library last week.

15. All your papers have to be done in MLA format.

If I actaully have to properly format my paper, it's normally APA. But most of the time my professors don't even care how my paper is formatted.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
