14 Times You Realize Your Roommate Is Your Friend

You're finally in college and now have one or more roommates that you've never met before. Anyone will tell you that your roommates won't always be your friends. For the most part, when you're new you guys become each other's secret blanket, venturing onto campus for the first time and going to those few initial events. After about the first two weeks you guys start getting consumed in your school work, joining clubs and before you know it your roommate is a roommate that you see sporadically throughout the day and at night.

On the other hand, you can have one of those rare and great experiences and that when your roommate becomes a long-lasting friend. Don't try to force it because it'll happen naturally but there are a few key moments when your roommate starts to become your close friend.

1. Getting them food when you're out

At first, it's just courtesy, but once you learn their favorite snacks and just bring them back without asking, that's real friendship.

2. Helping them pick out an outfit

This is a friendship essential. If I'm going anywhere semi important, you need the opinion of someone you trust.

3. Talking through the bathroom door

It's a bit weird and gross when you think about it but hey, when that's your friend your conversation doesn't end at the door.

4. Willingly making them a meal

If I'm eating, then we're eating. If I have money, then my friend has money. It's just a way of life.

5. Getting medicine and sticking around when they're sick

There's the typical college stereotype that when one person in a hall gets sick the whole building gets sick and while that's true most of the time you're trying to avoid that. When your bond with someone is tight, you're not going to be touchy when they'rre sick, but you are going to be there to get medicine and make tea to help them out.

6. Asking for genuine dating advice

Again, if I like you know me, then I value your opinion on these things.

7. You keep each other in check

College can't always be games and partying... you need to get down to your studies. A real friend isn't going to let you spiral out of control, they help you get your life together.

8. You keep in touch over time away

Weekends, vacations, holidays whatever it is you guys are completely in touch either through text or Snapchat.

9. You're not afraid to discuss difficult topics

When you are living with someone bringing up hard issues can be rough because you're afraid it can make the living arrangements uncomfortable. But with any friend, you discuss different things because you're open to other opinions.

10. You support each other in all endeavors

Going to events to support each other is roommate and friend goals.

11. You have better nights staying in than going out

Sometimes just chilling having a movie night and talking about weird things is better than any frat party.

12. You start doing weird things and don't judge each other

Trying yoga, singing in the mirror, the list goes on and as a roommate and friend your job is to just laugh along.

13. You know their random quirks and ticks and they know yours

They know what you're about to say or how You feel just from the start of your sentence of the way You change your face.

14. When they introduce you as a friend to someone you don't feel uncomfortable

The ultimate seal of friendship, it's like the exact opposite of the feeling you get when someone calls your best friend their best friend. This is actually something you accept.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
