Every time I say I play lacrosse, it just sparks so many questions about the sport and my own interest in the sport. I hear the same questions over and over again. I compiled a list of all the common questions I hear as soon as I say I play lacrosse.
1. Girls lacrosse isn't a sport because you can't hit each other.
It's just a non-contact sport but we do just as much running, training, and conditioning as other sports.
2. Lacrosse is SO violent.
Men's lacrosse is much more violent and is actually a contact sport, unlike women's lacrosse. We are not allowed to check or push without getting a penalty.
3. Why don't you have different size sticks?
I don't know, but if I had a long stick I would probably always be tripping over it since it's taller than me.
4. Isn't lacrosse basically like soccer?
I mean it's kind of like soccer but not exactly.
5. You play a sport while wearing a skirt...
Yeah, they're easier to run in.
6. Oh, so it's like freeze tag since you have to stop running when the whistle blows?
No. Not even close.
7. How do you even catch a ball with that stick?
Lots of practice.
8. I thought that's only played on the east coast...
Sure, it's more popular there but it's becoming more and more popular all around the United States.
9. So games always get canceled due to weather because it's a spring sport, right?
Ha, I've played in sleet, snow, and 20-degree weather before. So nope.
10. I don't know anyone who plays lacrosse.
...
11. So why did you start playing lacrosse?
Looked interesting enough and was more fun than softball was.
12. Just goggles and a mouthguard keeps you safe?
Since we are non-contact, that's all we need.
13. What's a lacrosse?
Goodbye.
