Going from high school to college is a really terrifying experience and a huge transition. Trying to learn all of the ins and outs while focusing on classes makes it even worse.
1. Your mom becomes your best friend.
Even though you two fought all of the time, she will be your go-to girl to cry to. She has been there with you through everything, and she will want to be there for you while you’re away. Even if you don’t have anything bad happening, just call her, and it will make her day.
2. Your favorite subject also becomes your least favorite.
You will start out absolutely loving a subject until you realize you have a mountain of papers on your desk due tomorrow for that class. You will love going to class to learn all of the material, but you will hate all of the work that comes with it.
3. Your roommates won’t always end up being your best friends.
Roommates will be your best and worst of friends. Sharing such a small space with one to three other people can really be hard for some people. If you aren’t best friends with your roommate, don’t fret. There are thousands of other people in the school for you to meet. Just make sure you guys can face each other every night!
4. No one cares what you did or who you were in high school when you get to college. No one cares how many people you dated, how many times you were on honor role or how many science classes you took. Start over, and make new friends and new memories. Stop living in high school and realize that everyone wants to make new friends with everyone.
5. Your planner is your best friend.Organization is key! Put everything in your planner, from tests and quizzes to homework and appointments. If you write it down, you won’t forget to do it. Take the time to sit down in the beginning of each semester to write down each and every test and quiz date for every class. It will save your butt in the future.
6. Get involved.
No matter how many people have told you this, do it! (Sorry, mom.) You will expose yourself to so many new people, and you will learn so many new and fun things. Join a group or sport that interests you. You might just find your best friend or future significant other just by having fun.
7. The freshmen 15 is a real thing.
Trust me, it is real. Staying healthy while eating in dining halls is hard sometimes, but if you try hard enough, you can do it. Work out, eat healthy and drink a lot of water, and you will be just fine.
8. Start developing your resumé ASAP.
You will use a resumé for almost everything once you get into college. Volunteer, get a job, join clubs and join a sorority or fraternity, anything to show employers that you do something with your life besides just studying and partying.
9. Break out of your comfort zone as much as you can.
If you don’t do something just because you aren’t comfortable, it should not stop you. You could be missing out on an incredible opportunity that you could fall in love with. Get out there and try anything that sounds fun to you!
10. Naps are heaven on earth.
Cherish your naps like you cherish a puppy. They will be worked into your schedule, and you will never regret them. Coffee and naps will be the reason why your eyes are even open (especially during finals).
11. Failure is not the end of the world.
You will fail one thing at least. It is not the worst thing that could happen. You can bounce back from it. Just remember to learn from your mistake and kill the next one!
12. Studying early is key.
On exams, there is so much information, you can’t cram it into a night of studying like you could in high school. Study as you go or start a week before, and then you won’t fail a thing! I know, it is easier said than done, but trust me, it will be worth it in the end.
13. Make time for you.
Go lay outside, workout, watch Netflix or take a nap. Just get away from studying and stress! If you don’t give yourself any time, then you will get sick, and you will end up doing worse than some of your other classmates. Find that balance between school and social life. Your body will thank you.
Hopefully some of these will come in handy for you future freshmen!
