13 Rules Of Life To Remember For 2020
Emily Maiello

As I cleaned my desk the other day, I came upon a small post-it sized note filled with my own cramped handwriting in black ink. I looked closer. It was a list of rules of life I had written for myself back in July. I was not having a great day, and it almost felt like the rules were pointing at me and telling me to listen. I read the small note and gasped. (Okay, fine, I probably didn't gasp…that was dramatic, but I definitely was surprised). These "rules" were exactly what I needed to hear, especially with the new year only just beginning. Even though this note had been tucked away in a small box on my desk, I knew that it did not deserve to be seen by my eyes only. Here are 13 rules of life to remember for your 2020.

Work hard at everything you do.

A hard work ethic is everything. If you do the very best that you can, you will go far.

You are too blessed to be stressed.

No more worrying about small, silly things. Count your blessings and be grateful for them. Everyday is Thanksgiving.

Family first.

I don't think I have to explain this one. Your family has been around you for longer than any other people on the planet! Do not fear telling them more about what is going on in your life, especially if you are in a bind.

Kindness goes a long way.

Let people know how much you care about them. Even strangers. No one ever said being kind is always easy, but it goes a long way.

Do not be afraid to speak up when things aren't fair.

"That's not fair!!!" I would yell to my dad when I was younger and something I didn't like was going on. He always gave me the same classic dad answer: "Life isn't fair, Madeline." As much as this answer infuriated me, I knew he was right. Sometimes life is just not fair; however, this does not mean that you have to be silent about it. Speak up when something deserves justice. Who knows? Maybe you will bring a change.

Respect yourself and everyone else, too.

If you have respect for every person you meet, you will be kinder, more understanding, and will be respected by others too. Have respect for yourself, and forgive yourself for making mistakes.

Make friends with everyone, and remember that we all have flaws.

Nobody's perfect. That's what Hannah Montana said, right?? So, then it must be true. Put yourself in other people's shoes before you get mad at something they do that you just simply do not understand. You can make friends with everyone or at least have a respect for everyone if you try to look at the world in their eyes.

Laugh every single day. It's good for you.

I laugh so much sometimes it might be too much. The smallest, stupidest things will have me in tears from laughing. It sounds silly, but I am also a very happy person. If you are able to laugh at yourself, you are reminding yourself not to be so hard on yourself. Next time you make a silly mistake, do not feel like you have to be disappointed in yourself for too long. Just laugh. Everything is going to be okay.

Radiate positive energy.

There is always a bright side.

Do not be ashamed of making good, healthy decisions.

If you are truly making the right decisions for yourself, then it does not matter what other people say.

It is okay to have a good cry.

Radiate positive energy, but if you are feeling down, do not feel like you have to bottle it up. Sometimes all you need is a good cry.

Love with your whole heart.

Cliché but true.

Trust in God and His process for your life.

If you do not believe in God, just know that things always work out. Everything happens for a reason. Give yourself time.

So, what do you think? What are some of your rules of life? This year, be kinder to yourself. It will pay off in the end.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
