If you're anything like me, you are probably questioning everything that's important to you after watching "13 Reasons Why" on Netflix. Having come out barely over a week ago, the show has taken over every millennial girls' (and guys? maybe?) life. Right from the beginning of tape one, side one, things got real. No matter how insignificant a moment seems in your life, could be the tipping point for someone else. Hannah Baker proved that to us in 13 dramatic and eye-opening episodes.
Though it's not a true story, there is still so much we can all take away from this show. Be kind everyone and think about how they can be affected by an incident at a party or a rumor that's going around. "13 Reasons Why" struck a chord in everyone who watched it, giving us all the feels for days.
Prepare for spoilers beyond this point!
Here are some of the times that made us cry, gasp, shut our eyes and our hearts got heavy throughout:
1. Hannah's mom.
She's a disaster throughout the entire show— quite understandably. Each time she begged people for answers about why her daughter did what she did, you couldn't help but want to scream through the computer, telling her about the tapes.
2. Any time Bryce came on the screen.
His aura just screams dangerous. I don't know if it was how he looks or the vibes he gave off with each step, but you could do nothing but feel uneasy any time Bryce was in a scene.
3. Jessica and Alex's relationship.
As sweet as it was to see two outsiders find love with each other, how heartbreaking was it to watch Hannah give them movie tickets and watch them move on from their friendship with her simultaneously?
4. Tony's story about the day Hannah died.
Though it probably wouldn't have made a difference if Tony had gone to the door in those moments, the look in his eyes—filled with regret and guilt—as he retells the story to Clay is chilling.
5. Justin's abusive "step-father."
Yes, Justin is undeniably one of the bigger assholes mentioned by Hannah, but you have to be sympathetic when you watch him get choked against the wall with his mom watching from close by.
6. When Jessica finds out about what really happened at the party.
I feel just as disgusted as Hannah did watching from the closet. It seemed so real and felt as if we were all there. With my hand over my mouth, I barely got through the flashback scene.
7. Jeff's untimely death.
He helped Clay grow up— gaining confidence and learning how to enjoy life. Showing the dumb jock stereotype but stressing how big of a heart he has, Jeff was easily the best supporting role.
8. Alex's suicide.
I don't know about anyone else, but I missed all of the signs that Alex was going to be next. Even though he was on the tapes, he seemed the most remorseful and an overall good person. Having him lose his life as well was extreme but also just another lesson for us to take from the story.
9. Hannah stealing razor blades from her parents' store.
It happened in front of their faces. In broad daylight. While they were having a conversation. Something about that is just so eery.
10. "A lot of you cared, just not enough."
Did this make you think about all of the relationships in your life? How many people do you care about? And how many do you care about enough?
11. Her second chance at life.
Hannah wanted to get better. She wanted the pain and suffering she'd been caused to be over. I was begging Mr. Porter to save her. Until he accused her of "causing" the rape, I thought things could have gotten better. But that's the way it works in life. She wanted justice. She wanted to feel safe again. All she got was blame placed on her.
12. Hannah's suicide.
Something many of us thought we'd never see was the most graphic, real, and disturbing scene of all. She seemed nervous, maybe even questioning if she should go through with it. But the blood that poured from her wrists took no mercy.
13. Her parents' reaction.
We're so used to the dramatics on television. If someone dies, everyone starts bawling and screaming. Hannah's mom had a different reaction than what we would expect but made it seem so much more of a real response. Frozen and not understanding, she just hugged her saying it'll be okay. The confusion in such a climactic moment made it so much harder to watch.
In a giant world that can make us all feel so alone at times, we need to start caring enough. For ourselves and everyone around us.
