Netflix's '13 Reasons Why' Addresses Tough Topics Without Glamorizing Them

Topics such as suicide, sexual assault, bullying are often avoided in conversations. A popular Netflix original, "13 Reasons Why," tackles these issues head-on.

The producers of the show want to start the conversation and make people more aware. In the show, there is rape, suicide, sexual assault, addiction, depression, racism, bullying, homosexuality, and school shootings. Every one of these topics is painful to talk about but even more painful for the victims. Often victims are shamed into silence but the purpose of "13 Reasons Why" is to shine a light on these topics.

"13 Reason Why" has very graphic scenes depicting rape and sexual assault. Some viewers believe that the scenes are too graphic and are just meant to scare you. But I believe that it is better that the scenes are so graphic because it is it creates a better understanding of what happens in real life.

Television shows often glamorize issues and don't give them the attention they need. In the United States there is an average of 321,500 victims of rape and sexual assault every year. This is obviously a large issue in our country and something needs to change.

"13 Reasons Why" has started a conversation that must continue and help create change and justice for the victims.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
