Being a part of student leadership at college is fantastic, but you do get tasked with helping everyone move in. In case you were wondering what we're all thinking, here's a pretty good run through.
30 minutes before check in opens: Why on earth are there already 20 people in line?
5 minutes before check in opens: Maybe we can all hide and they'll go away...
"Does anyone know what happened to the blue tape?"
As soon as check in opens: Why didn't I go to the bathroom before this started?
"I recommend filling out your room inventory before you bring in boxes...oh never mind."
15 minutes after check in opens: Oh please let them be on the first floor...
"I'm sorry, which room number did you say again?"
40 minutes in: Is that a U-haul? Hide now!
"Yes, the laundry card machine only excepts $5.00 bills, no I'm sorry I don't have change."
1 hour in: What is in this box?! Cinder blocks?
"I recommend you don't hold the envelope upside down, it has your key in it.."
2 hours in: This is my 22nd trip up the stairs...why do they make moving boxes such awkward shapes?
"No, I'm sorry, you can't use command hooks on the walls."
2.5 hours in: So much stuff...
"Be sure to check out the welcome fair!"
3 hours in: Ooh yes, this is pillows and bedding, thank you, thank you, thank you!
"Is there anything else I can help you with?"
3.5 hours in: Hmm, I've only eaten doughnuts today...
"I need to put in a work order for room 213, the bed frames are stuck."
4 hours in: Can the last two people just show up so we can be done?
"No, I'm sorry, we don't have window screens, but you can buy magnetic ones at the hardware store."
5 hours in: 5...4...3...2...1... We're done!!
In the end, move in day is exhausting, but just the beginning of our excitement. Rest assured that we're truly pumped for the coming year with our residents and can't wait to get to know them better.
