As I leave for Shippensburg University on the 24th, I figured I would pay homage to my dear, sweet Lancaster County. So here's to you Lancaster. Thank you for giving me an entertaining 18 years, and here are the things anyone would know from growing up in this suburb.
1. Farms. They are everywhere you look.
You know you have reached Lancaster County when, everywhere you look, there is a farm.
2. Horse and buggies are always on the road.
A horse and buggy is pictured in the Lancaster geo-tag on Snapchat, and even drunk driving buggy accidents happen just as much as a motor vehicle DUI's.
3. Summer is not complete without corn.
Corn is everywhere, and by the end of the summer, I guarantee the stalk will be twice your height (assuming you're five feet tall like I am.)
4. Cow poop.
The moment you get your first whiff of cow poop, that is how you know spring has come, and summer will never be complete without horse-manured roads!
5. Lady Gaga.
Unfortunately her relationship with Taylor Kinney ended, but Lancaster did get our moments of fame when Gaga would come to visit!
6. "Amish Mafia" and "Breaking Amish."
While these shows are completely made up and scripted, just like all reality shows are, people still believe this is what the Amish are like. Oh and by the way, not everyone that lives here is Amish.
7. There is nothing to do here.
Granted, every person will claim this about their hometown, but its true! No one from Lancaster understands why tourists visit because there is nothing exciting here, besides the Amish.
8. Bring your tractor to school day.
Yes, this is an actual thing that high schools in the county do.
9. It is not Lan-cas-ter!
There is nothing more annoying than hearing someone say, "lan-cast-er," because it is lang-kiss-stir, obviously.
10. We have funny names for towns.
For example: Blue-ball, Intercorse, Fertility and Bird-in-Hand. There are legitimate reasons for these names, but that's not what people seem to focus on.
11. College.
A majority of high schoolers from Lancaster will go on to study at Shippensburg, Kutztown, Temple, Penn State or Millersville. The best thing is that all of these are great schools, so it is a win win!
12. I would not be who I am without living in Lancaster.
As much as everyone complains about Lancaster, I will miss it every once and a while. So Lancaster, it has been real, it's been fun, it's been really fun, but I must move on to greener pastures -- no pun intended. As for Shippensburg, I can't wait to see you on Wednesday!
