12 Things 'The Lord of the Rings' Taught Me

I started watching movies with my dad when I was very little. He would come home from work, sit down in his big chair, turn on a movie and we would watch it together. But one of my favorites will always be "The Lord of the Rings."

When I was younger, I was transported to a world of scary monsters and pretty elves. Now, I watch those movies and I understand why they mean so much to me. They taught me a lot about life, friendship po-tay-toes and more.

Here are some things "The Lord of the Rings" has taught me:

1. How to be a loyal friend.

No matter how hard Sauron makes life for The Fellowship, they never fail to support Frodo. They may separate for awhile, but they always come back together stronger than before.

2. Honesty.

I mean, Aragorn had just fell off a cliff, nearly drowned, and rode unconscious on a horse to find the rest of the company and this is how Legolas greets him. He did look pretty rough. But looks were probably the least of their worries when Sauron was sending Orcs after them 24/7.

3. What love is.

A beautiful elf gives up immortality to marry the man she loves. They do go through this phase with her dad trying to separate them, and Aragorn tells her he can't be with her because immortality is worth more than loving him—typical love story.

4. Second breakfast.

I had no idea Second breakfast was a thing before "The Lord of the Rings." On a side note, Pippin is my spirit animal.

5. Women are powerful.

Growing up, this was super important and progressive. It showed me that I could do anything a man could do and more as long as I tried hard enough. Eowyn definitely doesn't get the credit she deserves.

6. Sometimes you need a little help.

This whole movie is about helping a small Hobbit destroy an all powerful ring. Help isn't a bad thing. No matter how strong we are, sometimes we need someone to pick us up and carry us through Mordor.

7. Nothing is impossible.

Even in the darkest times, Aragorn kept everyone's hopes up. Life gets hard, especially if you're a little Hobbit that has never left home and suddenly you're thrust into an adventure. Just remember there is always hope and there is always a reason to try.

8. You should always give people a chance.

Don't be like Aragorn, believe in your fellow humans. But also don't be like Boromir because if you've seen any show or movie with Sean Bean you know how it ends.

9. Believe in yourself.

If you believe in yourself, you can do amazing things! Lady Galadriel says so, and she's scary when she's mad so you should probably listen to her.

10. Bad days are just bad days.

This is my favorite quote from the whole trilogy. Samwise Gamgee is a true inspiration. He reminds us to keep going when things are bad because it won't last forever. When the darkness comes, the sun will shine eventually.

11. There's always a new adventure.

There is always something to do or experience if you use a little bit of creative thinking. Gandalf is probably the greatest adventurer ever, so if he says the journey doesn't end here then go find another adventure.

12. Po-tay-toes are everything.

I need a few good taters right now, Sam. Really though, potatoes are great and Sam is great. I would dream of taters too if I had to live off of lembas bread for months.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
