There are a lot of jobs in the world, but the restaurant business in particular, especially waitressing, is extremely common. I have been a waitress for four years on and off, and it can be harder than you think. I rely on my waitressing job to get me through college and get somewhere, but while I'm here, I might as well find some humor in it and let the world know what it's like to be the one serving food. So here are the struggles we face...
1. Restaurants thrive on weekend business, so guess who's working? You are! You will work late into the evening as you sneak peaks at your friends' Snapchat stories who are out with a drink.
2. Customers love to complain to you about food that you didn't cook. I'm sorry, but please don't be mad at me. I barely know how to cook toast you're actually lucky I had nothing to do with the cooking of your food.
3. Depending on the dress code of where you work, you probably have an outfit you have to find last minute and throw on almost everyday of the week. And you definitely have a great collection of close-toed shoes if your in the restaurant business (my black Skechers might be my favorite).
4. You go into work when your sick because you know no one will want to cover for you...or you just got a cover yesterday.
5. The beautiful art of stacking plates is perfected every time you try to balance four peoples' half eaten meals, a kids menu and some crayons in your hands.
6. Doubles...12 hours of standing and talking and being cheerful. At least you burn more calories standing? It makes up for the food you inhale after work.
7. Choosing what to eat after your shift. Whether it's off the menu of your restaurant or you have something delicious waiting for you at home, it is the only thing you will think about all day. "When can I eat?" Maybe that's just me, but I like looking forward to food rather than polishing the silverware or cleaning the bathrooms.
8. Sidework-- we don't just serve tables, we also have many other important jobs that the entire business depends on...like...cutting lemons.
9. Putting in orders wrong, "Ha, the kitchen must have messed that up! Let me take it back for you, sir."
(They didn't mess it up. I probably just got distracted by the food on the table next to me as I took the order.)
10. To-go orders.
11. Being super nice, feeling that friendly spark with your customer and expecting that big tip, but then they write $2 on the check. "I thought we were friends?"
12. Some customers are difficult. Maybe they're having a bad day and are taking it out on you. Maybe they just like the misery of you picking out what they didn't want in their wrap. Maybe they've enjoyed the wine you sold them a little too much. I mean, when you take a table who knows what will happen?
To all my fellow restaurant workers out there, always remember to keep the humor in your work and keep your co-workers and yourself laughing when you're hating it.
