Award Season is coming! It is that time of the year where predictions and Academy movies are released! These movies have caused a buzz this year, some being out for months and some not even released yet. Below are movies I handpicked that I thought would make a splash at the 2018 Academy Awards.
These twelve movies have inspired, shocked, and thrilled millions of viewers and some hope to take home an Oscar. Some of these movies will definitely be up for awards and some are movies I thought deserved recognition. The movies aren't listed in any particular order.
1. Dunkirk (dir. Christopher Nolan)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
This might be Christopher Nolan’s first director win! A frontrunner for Best Picture and just overall good storytelling.
2. Get Out (dir. Jordan Peele)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor Daniel Kaluuya, Best Supporting Actress Allison Williams, and Best Original Screenplay.
Jordan Peele’s first movie, created a new genre, had the whole movie industry shook, and made a lot of money in the box-office even with its small budget.
3. Call Me by Your Name (dir. Luca Guadagnino)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor Timothée Chalamet, Best Supporting Actor Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
BIG movie to watch out for! Timothee Chalamet if nominated will be the youngest at 21 to be nominated for Best Actor.
4. The Big Sick (dir. Michael Showalter)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor Ray Romano, Best Supporting Actress Holly Hunter, and Best Original Screenplay.
A bit of a reach for The Big Sick but it was a very sweet and thoughtful movie.
5. Blade Runner 2049 (dir. Denis Villeneuve)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director Denis Villeneuve, and Best Supporting Actor Harrison Ford.
Even though it crashed at the box office it was still a masterpiece and deserves recognition.
6. Lady Bird (dir. Greta Gerwig)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress Saoirse Ronan, Best Supporting Actress Laurie Metcalf, and Best Original Screenplay.
Not out yet but critics are predicting it goes far.
7. Wonder Woman (dir. Patty Jenkins)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture and Best Director
Opened up the discussion of women directors and is the highest grossing movie made by a woman! PATTY JENKINS DESERVES RECOGNITION!
8. Battle of the Sexes (dirs. Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress Emma Stone, Best Supporting Actor Steve Carell, Best Supporting Actress Andrea Riseborough, and Best Original Screenplay.
Came out at the perfect time, Emma Stone is coming off of her first Best Actress win and Steve Carell is a star in every movie.
9. I, Tonya (dir. Graig Gillespie)
Potential Nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress Margot Robbie, Best Supporting Actress Allison Janney, and Best Original Screenplay.
Not out yet but is making big talk. Apparently could be Margot and Allison’s best work.
10. Breathe (dir. Andy Serkis)
Potential Nominations: Andrew Garfield Best Actor and Claire Foy Best Supporting Actress.
Andrew Garfield could win his first Oscar and Claire Foy is coming down from her Netflix The Crown hype.
11. Logan (dir. James Mangold)
Potential Nominations: Patrick Stewart Best Supporting Actor.
Patrick deserves the win! He has been in the business for 50+ years and is very deserving. Really good reviews but could be a longshot.
12. Okja (dir. Bong Joon-ho)
Potential Nominations: Jake Gyllenhaal Best Supporting Actor.
JUST GIVE JAKE THE OSCAR, even though people liked it at Cannes it probably won’t get many nominations. Gyllenhaal could get nominated for this movie or another movie he recently starred in.
Comment movies you think will be nominated and your thoughts!
