As we approach 2018, I think it is important to reflect back on what has occurred over the past year. Here are several events you may or may not have missed throughout the year:

1. January: President Trump's inauguration.

President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on Friday, January, 20.

2. January: Women's March.

The Women's March, a worldwide protest, happened on January 21, 2017, to advocate legislation and policies regarding human rights and other issues.

3. February: The Patriots beat the Falcons in the Super Bowl.

Patriots beat the Falcons 34-28 in the first Super Bowl game to go into overtime.

4. April: A shooter posts a murder on Facebook.

Steve Stephen, the murderer of Robert Godwin, posted a video on Facebook of him killing the 74-year-old man on Easter Sunday.

5. August: Total Solar Eclipse.

The solar eclipse that occurred on August 21, 2017, was named "The Great American Eclipse." It was visible within a band from the west to east coasts.

6. September: Irma, a category 5 hurricane, hits the Caribbean and United States.

Hurricane Irma had landfalls in Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Martin, Anguilla, Turks and Caicos, The Bahamas, Cuba, and the United States.

7. September: Maria, a category 4 hurricane, makes landfall in Puerto Rico.

The tenth-most intense Atlantic hurricane on record made landfall on September 20th.

8. October: Las Vegas Strip shooting was the deadliest in modern American history.

Stephen Paddock, shot down from the 32nd floor of a Las Vegas Strip casino at an outdoor country music festival, killing 58 people and injuring hundreds of other people.

9. October: Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations.

The Harvey Weinstein allegations lead to the #MeToo campaign on social media where people opened up about their own experience with sexual assault.

10. October: Deadly California Wildfires.

Deadly wildfires in California continue through to December, forcing mass evacuations across the state.

11. November: Astros defeat the Dodgers in the World Series.

The Astros defeated the Dodgers, four games to three, to win their first World Series in franchise history.

12. December: FCC votes to repeal net neutrality.

The FCC voted to do away with rules preventing internet providers from blocking or slowing down access to online content.


My hopes are that after looking back on how these events unfolded in 2017, we cannot forget to support the places that need support and we still cherish the positive events that came out of 2017.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
