Pretty Luscious Things

Dating is probably one of the weirdest experiences on the planet. It's a strange ritual where we all pretend to be someone we're not, have hobbies we never do and dress in ways we never dress in order to interest the other person. First dates are where your best manners are on display and you really hope to impress your date. But, some people didn't seem to get that memo.

1. The Doomsday Date

"One of my first dates was on 12/12/12 and there's nothing really awkward about it but the fact that we said we'd text each other in the morning if we were still alive after "doom's day." We did."

-Sally

2. The Second Chance

I went on this date like 45 minutes away from my school to this super fancy restaurant with my best friend. We just wanted to see how things would go. So, we get there and sat in silence-- it was so awkward-- and he started asking me all these weird questions like "where do you see yourself in the next couple years" like we were in an interview! He awkwardly, quickly kissed me when he dropped me off and we didn't talk for like two months. I walked into a class when second semester started and he was in there and we started hanging out a bunch again and now he's my boyfriend of six months."

- Bella

3. The Foul-Mouth

"My date and I were sitting near a window where we could see the parking lot and someone put his hand on his car and he literally ran outside to yell at them and everyone could hear him inside because he was quite loudly yelling the word 'motherfucking' a lot."

- Carey

4. The "Too Much Too Soon"

"My first date with my ex-boyfriend was to his mom's wedding. I had never met any of his family before."

- Katie

5. The Wrong Movie, Wrong Time

"I went on my first date freshmen year with the cross country star of our school-- sweet girl, very pure kind of personality-- so I did not want to go to a super raunchy movie. I picked this action-thriller movie with Brad Pitt in it thinking "hey, if he's in it, the movie cannot be that bad". The movie ended with a sex-chair scene and I was mortified. Did not have the guts to even look at her, just sat there like I was just frozen. Movie finally ended and I took her home. Talking to her parents about the movie I just wanted to jump out the window."

-Ashton

6. The Almost Awkward

"So first date, I thought he was opening the car door for me-- but nope he wasn't, he needed to open my door because his door wouldn't open."

- Kim

7. The Awkward

"I just went on a first date with a guy that told me that he was still in a relationship (living with his girlfriend) on the first date."

- Danica

8. The Really Awkward

"I was on a date with this girl I had met and as we were eating, another girl that I had just stopped talking to (but I stayed the night with her only a week before) came in with her best friend. They sat her right behind my date and me. We were facing each other."

-Chris

9. The Half-Off

"I was once on a first date, the guy forgot his wallet and halfway through he looked at me and said, "I bet you look good naked!" We cut the date short and when he got back to his car and his wallet, he pulled out a $10 bill and said that should cover his dinner and his beer, it was on sale. Wtf?!"

-Tracy

10. His Choice? Not Her Choice.

"Blind Date. Met at a Vietnamese Restaurant. His choice. He proceeded to tell me that his last date shit in her pants after eating at this restaurant and he wanted to see if I would have the same reaction. Needless to say, I didn't wait for my food to arrive before exiting."

-Mary

11. The One Who Was a Bad Date

"I went on a date with this guy to see a scary movie. It was going really well and we were getting along great. He walked me out to my car and when I went to start it, my battery was dead. He was really nice and said he would jump my car. The problem was I'm terrified of electricity so I started bawling in the parking lot to someone I had just met 3 hours prior."

-Anna

12. Good Idea Gone Bad

"I met a guy and we decided to go out on a date. He invited me to a bar, picked me up and we went to a pretty cool sports bar in Southern Pines. As soon as we got there, he turned and looked at me and said "You don't mind if we watch the game, do you?", thinking it was only going to be like the first quarter and starting soon, I said sure. I was wrong- so, so wrong. The game didn't start for another two hours but we needed a "good" spot and we stayed for the entire thing. I didn't like the Patriots then and I definitely don't like them now. I have never sat in a restaurant for six hours until that date."

-Savannah

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
