11 Move-In Day Thoughts Every College Freshman Has In Quick Succession
Samantha Kerker

As I'm sure many college freshmen can relate, I had an overwhelming yet exciting move-in day. My day was full of emotions and confusing thoughts, but in the long run, I enjoyed every minute of it. It was a great day spent with my family and friends, and a great way to say goodbye and start my next journey in life.

1. "I'm moving out today. Oh no! I'm moving out today!"

Waking up on the morning of your freshman move-in day is one of the most exciting things you will experience. Your mind is running a mile a minute, considering you are moving out of your home. "Will I like my new home?" I asked myself this question the morning of my move-in day, hoping the answer would be yes, because I knew I would be stuck here until May. I questioned whether I would like my neighbors in my dorm and whether or I not I would be able to adjust to my new living style. After a few short days of being slightly overwhelmed with my new life, my dorm started to feel like home.

2. "When did I grow up?"

This question popped in my head a few times while I was moving into my dorm. I couldn't help but think how crazy it was that I was moving out of my parent's house, let alone two and a half hours away from everyone and everything I have ever known. It still seems surreal that I am in college and moved out of the house, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

3. "How am I going to fit all of this stuff into my dorm?"

If you are like me, you over-bought when planning the layout of your dorm room. Every time I went out to buy something for my dorm room, I would always end up with something that was not on my list. "Oh! I'll need that!" or "Oh! I saw a girl that had one of these! Maybe I will need one!" After a while, I realized half of the stuff that I had was not important, but I still managed to fit all of my stuff in my dorm, whether I needed it or not.

4. "This better turn out how I imagined."

Everyone worries whether or not their "picture perfect" dorm room will end up looking how they imagined it to. As I was setting up my room, I was constantly worrying that it looked terrible and was the complete opposite of what I had imagined.

5. "I don't want to say goodbye yet."

You knew from the moment you woke up that you were dreading all of the goodbyes. Whether it was only your parents moving you in, your parents and grandparents there for your move-in day, or your friends tagged along for the day, the goodbyes were not going to be easy. My family and friends and I kept ignoring the fact that we had to say goodbye to each other, because after all, they are all you have ever known, and leaving them is going to be one of the hardest things you do.

6. "Are my roommate and I going to get along?"

This question is really important. You have to get along with the person you are going to be sharing close quarters with for the next ten months of your life. A lot of students will worry about their first impression, but in the long run, just act as yourself and you and your roommate will get along just fine. If you are lucky like I am, you and your roommate will get along great. My roommate and I are extremely alike and we hang out with the same group of friends, so we spend a lot of time together.

7. "I hope I don't walk into the wrong class."

Face it, every freshman's fear is walking into the wrong class. I walked my schedule beforehand to avoid this problem, but if you didn't, your new campus could be a bit intimidating. Just make sure you take an hour or two out of your day to walk your classes and you will have one less thing to stress about on your first day of class.

8. "How do I make new friends?"

Again, if you have a stroke of luck like I did, you will be handed the world's best college friends right off the bat. My roommate and I made friends with people in our wing of our dorm hall the first weekend of school. At first I felt a little skeptical about making new friends, as most incoming freshman do, but my friends welcomed me like we had known each other for years. I already know these are going to be the people I will be spending the next four years with.

9. "How do I leave my childhood friends behind?"

This question ran through my head for weeks before I had moved in. My two best friends, Mikayla and Alyssa, were planning on driving down to my school with me on move-in day, which made saying goodbye even harder. After one last road trip with my two best friends, we unpacked the car and moved all of my stuff into my dorm. We spent the whole day together and ended the day with getting lunch together and one last Target run. Our goodbyes were full of tears, but we all knew this time had to come. I couldn't be happier to have people in my life that made saying goodbye so hard.

10. "I need a nap."

If you had as many things to move in as I did, then you'll see where I'm coming from with this. After moving all of the boxes in, unloading everything, rearranging the room, decorating the room and saying a million goodbyes, I was ready to take a quick power nap. A lot of people I talked to on my campus told me they were exhausted on move-in day, but that didn't get in the way of us having a great first night at college.

11. "I never want to leave."

After you are all settled in, you've said your goodbyes to family and friends, and you're comfortable around your roommate, you finally feel like you are at home. That was one of the best moments I have experienced while being away at college. I felt as though I belonged here and I never wanted to leave. It was a new place to call home and I couldn't be more proud to call this campus my home.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
