11 Things You Only Understand After Joining Greek Life

No matter the letters, we're better together

11 Things You Only Understand After Joining Greek Life

Trying to understand Greek life is confusing for anyone. Up until the time when you actually join, it's basically a mystery. Honestly, this overused quote describes it perfectly: "From the outside looking in you can't understand it, from the inside looking out you can't explain it." So, here's a list of things that you probably didn't understand until you were actually in Greek life.

1. You learned how to read Greek letters.

Let's start with the basics. Before joining Greek life, you probably had no idea what the difference between a Phi and a Chi was or that an Omega was different from an Omicron. Now, you consider yourself a pro at identifying Greek letters and if you're really good, you even know the alphabet in order!

2. GroupMe can be both wonderful and annoying.

It's basically impossible to keep up with your chapter's GroupMe unless you're on it all of the time. It can be a great tool to connect you with your chapter, but it also blows up and sometimes gets annoying. It's also a great distraction because you never want to miss anything that's said, so instead of writing your essay you're constantly checking the app.

3. Alcohol can and should be used as a currency.

I think that this one is pretty self-explanatory and you all know what I'm talking about.

4. What Jungle Juice Is

I'm still not sure if I understand this one, but it's definitely not as bad as I thought it would be.

5. GoFundMe can pretty much be used for anything.

I've seen a GoFundMe for basically everything. Sometimes it's a great way of raising money for an actual cause and sometimes it's just used for things that I'd never give my money to. I guess it never hurts to try.

6. Philanthropies get super competitive.

Sure, we're all there to raise money for a good cause, but if you get in my way, I will cut you. Philanthropies seem to bring out the competitive streak in everyone and Greek unity basically goes down the drain until the philanthropy event is over.

7. You have a love/hate relationship with theme parties

Let's be honest, a lot of the time, themes are just a way for fraternities to get the girls to dress in variations of underwear. However, can we please at least keep the themes simple? Who thinks of these?

8. Finding a date to formal can be more stressful than finals.

Finding the perfect date is basically impossible and it is an extremely long process. Finding a date takes days of planning and all of your friends will have a different opinion about who you should take. Choose wisely.

9. You have a whole wardrobe of clothes that you only wear once a week.

No one wants to actually wear meeting attire on a regular basis.

10. Snapchat is both your best friend and your worst enemy.

It's great to know what's happening in other people's lives, but a saved snap or ending up too drunk on someone else's Snapchat story can be a nightmare.

11. You really can feel a bond with over 100 people.

Before I joined Greek life, I didn't believe that it was possible to feel a connection with that many people just because of shared letters. However, it does happen. Even though Greek life can be a mess sometimes, at the end of the day you have your sisters or brothers there by your side.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
