Dear Sophia,

I know you are about to be eleven years old, so to celebrate, I wrote you this letter. In this letter, you will find eleven things that I want you to know, and that I never want you to forget. Happy birthday beautiful!

1.) You are so incredibly strong.

This isn't just because you're an awesome swimmer and have thighs of steel. That's certainly part of it though. It's also because of despite all you have gone through at such a young age, you still carry on and stay true to yourself. I absolutely love you for that.

2.) It's okay to have feelings.

I know you are sensitive and that is alright! It doesn't make you weak like you might think sometimes. It actually does the complete opposite. It's okay to be sad, upset, or angry. Humans are awesome because we are able to feel so many different emotions, so take advantage of it!

3.) You are the most beautiful soon to be eleven year old I know.

No, I'm not just saying this because I am your sister. It's the complete and honest truth. You are gorgeous inside and out. I know you might disagree with me, but trust me. You are flawless, please don't feel like you need to change.

4.) You are loved by so many.

You aren't just loved by me, but by so many others like your other family members, your friends, your teammates, coaches, and by many others who you may not even know. You are cherished by all of us.

5.) Try hard to be positive.

I know you have had your fair share of battles for only being eleven years old, and because of this it may be easy to get wrapped up into negative thoughts. However, I want you to know that there are always positives. So just think about all of the great things you have in your life whenever you are feeling down.

6.) Eat like a champ, always.

I will never not be impressed with your eating habits. You can eat more food than me, and I am twice your age! However, I love it because it shows you aren't afraid to hold back.

7.) Smile and laugh often.

Your smile and laugh are so contagious! There needs to be more of it in this world.

8.) Do not be afraid to reach out to me.

I know we are both busy girls, but I want you to know that I would drop anything if you need me. I am only a text or phone call and a short ten minute drive away! So please, if you need me, talk to me and let me know!

9.) Stay true to yourself.

You are so amazing the way you are, so why change?? There is absolutely no need to! Keep on being you sis. :)

10.) Swim your heart out.

I can tell you really love the sport, and you look so happy when you swim! You are like a mermaid, you spend all of the time in the water that you can, and that is awesome because it makes you unique. So if you really love swimming, try your best and don't stop! You never know where it will take you.

11.) Daddy is and always will be so proud of you.

My heart aches for you because you only got to spend seven years of life with him. However, don't think for a second that he isn't watching you from above and smiling down at you because he is. No matter what you do, he is always going to be proud of you because he loves you that much. Never forget that.

I hope these things make you feel good and reassured about your amazing self because you deserve it. I love you more than you will ever know.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
