Jersey is a very special state. One that has, several connotations.
1. Malls
Just face it. Jersey is known for its malls. In fact whenever I say I’m from Jersey, I get some variation of, “Oh yea, I’ve been there. It’s got a really big mall right?”
2. No self-serve gas
It’s true. Jersey girls and guys don't know how to pump gas. Every time my friends go to get gas here, I always roll down my window and wait for someone to approach the car and they always laugh at me. Every time.
3. The Jersey Shore
Unfortunately I think we’re known more for the show than for our actual beaches, but either way it still comes to mind. The big hair, Snookie, you know the drill.
4. The Sopranos
For the slightly older generation, Jersey brings up the mob and Italians. It also brings up the great saying “Bada Bing!” and the strip club named after it.
5. Close to the city but not the city
New Jersey: Not New York, but close. For some reason Jersey is considered more New York than other neighboring states like Connecticut and Pennsylvania. Why? I’m not quite sure.
6. Bon Jovi
Who says you can’t go home? Not Bon Jovi of course.
7. Bruce Springsteen
Yet another piece of proof that if you come from Jersey there is hope for you. The legendary Bruce Springsteen, born and raised in South Jersey everyone.
8. No football team or most pro sports (Sorry, NJ Devils)
Yep, New York won on this one. With the Yankees, the Mets, the Giants and the Jets, what did Jersey get left with? Hockey. Because you know New Jersey is basically, almost, not quite New York right?
9. Diners
For some reason, New Jersey is full of diners. And good ones for that fact. I have probably five diners within a 15 minute drive from my house. Is that normal?
10. Wawa
Oh Wawa. Even though I live in North Jersey where a Wawa sadly doesn’t exist, I think it’s safe to say Wawas still characterize NJ. Going down to the shore and stopping at Wawa is not only a tradition, it’s necessary. (PS for those of you who don’t know, it’s a glorified 7/11 except you can actually get GOOD food there.)
11. What exit?
What exit you live off the NJ parkway basically defines your life.
