11 Things All Incoming College Freshmen Should Remember

It's the best of times, it's the worst of times.

11 Things All Incoming College Freshmen Should Remember
Sara Catherine Joseph

College is the best time of your life. My family has repeatedly told me this over the course of my college career, but I didn't really believe it until it started coming to the end. To the incoming college freshmen, enjoy these four years. They fly by.

1. Go to class.

It's really hard to make good grades if you're watching Netflix instead of being in class. Even if there's not an attendance policy and the professor puts the powerpoint online, go to class. Usually in classes like that, the professor will practically read his tests to the people who are there.

2. And whatever you do, do not schedule an 8 AM.

You will definitely think, "I had school at 8 o'clock every day in high school. I can totally do this." No, no you cannot. Trust me.

3. Buy the books for your class.

You may only use it once, but I promise you will actually need the book.

4. Get to know your professors.

When they get to know your name and face (see number 1), sometimes they'll round your grade up at the end of the semester or are more willing to write you recommendation letters.

5. Don't sit on the back row.

You will be tempted to scroll through Facebook or text, but if you're near the front, you're more likely to pay attention, which in return will let your professor get to know you, which will give you better grades. See the pattern here?

6. Get involved around campus.

Go through sorority/fraternity recruitment, if that's your thing. I am so thankful I did, because I met so many girls and I always have a study group in my classes. But if that's not your thing, then find something that interests you, it's definitely on your college campus.

7. It's not the end of the world if you don't get the sorority/fraternity you wanted.

You will make friends everywhere. Greek life isn't the only place to find your home.

8. Whatever you don't understand from the lecture will definitely be on the test.

Absolutely do not wait until the night before to start studying for your test either. You will thank me later.

9. It's okay if you aren't best friends with your dorm floor right away.

These friendships take time!

10. Remember that you're there to get an education.

*wondering when I turned into my mother* but do I really have to elaborate on this one? See numbers 1-7

11. SLEEP!!!

I've had some semesters where I could count on one hand the amount of hours I slept. Your friends and family will thank you if you ~try~ to sleep a decent amount.

Overall, college is the best. At times it's overwhelming and it is definitely intimidating. Keep your head up, you can do it. After all, it is the best time of your life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
