1. Everything is sooo spread out!
Drive for 15 minutes. Nothing, only grass. Oh one house far away. Drive for another 15 minutes. Nothing, only grass. Some trees. Oh wow 2 houses!
2.Where do you cross the road???
Pedestrians seem to be an alien concept in small towns where driving is the norm. Cars whiz by so fast and there is no zebra crossing to get from one side of the road to another!
3. EVERYONE has their own car
Speaking of driving, Americans seems to LOVE it. They seem to love it so much that there is almost no public transport! In a small town, taxis and trains are such foreign concepts. How are people supposed to get around if they can’t drive here!
4. Driving on the wrong side of the road
It took me so long to get used to seeing people drive on the wrong side of the world. Coming from the east and from a British influenced country, this seems very strange
5. Food portions are HUGE
Either my appetite is tiny or food portions here are not meant to be finished. True story: my parents and I ordered a large pizza to be shared by all of us. When it arrived, the was almost as long as the bed.
6. Calling a commode a toilet
From where I’m from, the place where one showers, etc is known as the toilet and the thing where one empties their bladder is known as a commode. This difference led to some very interesting conversations during my first week here.
7. Why are your plugs different from every other country’s?
I had to buy so many adapters for everything I had to plug in!
8. Where are the spices in the food?
Coming from an Asian country, I am used to a ton of spices in my food. “Spices” doesn’t mean spicy or hot, but flavourful. Salt and pepper is not only what can be added for additional flavour! There are a TON of GREAT spices that make food taste AMAZING.
9. Uhhh why do you guys have advertisements for lawyers???
Is it just me or is this weird for everyone?
10. There is a HUGE gap between the doors in toilets (or should I say restrooms?)
What’s the point of the door when people can see right through!
11. This country is B I G
Coming from a place where you can pretty much fly anywhere in the country and reach within a few hours, the sheer size of the country perplexes me.
