If you're anything like me, you may find that one of the most exciting parts about college is when your hometown friends visit you at school. While we're lucky to live in a world where group chats, FaceTime, and Skype exist, sometimes those just don't cut it. When your friends pay you a visit, you finally get the chance to show them your new life. Nothing compares to that. Especially if your new life is at Penn State University.
Despite my friends' reasonings for not attending Penn State, I've never had a friend say anything negative after visiting University Park. With that being said, I'm sure every Penn Stater has encountered a few of these bumps in the road while having visitors:
1. The struggle of getting guest tickets for football games is real.
It's not that you're worried your friends won't pay you back for the ticket. It's not even about spending money. Obtaining a guest ticket for the student section is a battle full of waiting, long lines and excessive standing.
2. "Where should I park?"
I wish I had an answer to this question, but even the students who have lived here for four years have trouble finding parking. Parking garages can get expensive depending on the days. Also, forget finding an open spot downtown.
3. You visit the creamery way too often, but your friends are dying to try it.
You would never pass up a trip to the creamery, but your stomach is starting to hate you.
4. The sleeping situation is also rather difficult.
If your friends are staying in your dorm room, I don't have much advice for you. The beds are twin sized and there's not necessarily enough room for people to comfortably sleep on the floor. In apartments, the bed situation may be similar, but you may be able to fit some air mattresses or sleeping bags somewhere.
5. If your friends visit on a weekday, you may have to bring them to some of your lectures.
One of my best friends goes to a small, private school, but one day my friend and I dragged her to a lecture in Thomas 100. She said she'll never do it again.
6. When you chant "We Are" and sing the alma mater, but your friends make fun of you.
Penn State fans are incredibly loyal. Your friends just don't understand how it is possible to be filled with that much pride.
7. You also have to listen to your friends complain about how "PSU is a cult."
If going here makes me part of a "cult," count me in.
8. You offer to buy your friends food or a t-shirt, but then realize you are out of Lion Cash.
You then have to explain what Lion Cash is. You want your friends to rep Penn State even after they leave, but as a broke college student, it might not happen.
9. That moment when you feel like a literal tour guide.
"And on the right we are passing Penn State's most famous landscape: Old Main."
You also need to be able to recommend the best restaurants downtown.
10. You lend your friends some of your clothes because the weather can go from 80 degrees and sunny to a hurricane all in the same week.
No matter what, it always seems to be humid in Happy Valley. Other than that, the weather is extremely unpredictable.
11. Wishing your friends would transfer because you miss them so much...
You can't seem to understand why they wouldn't want to go to the best school in the world.
Some of my hometown friends applied to Penn State, while others were strongly opposed to becoming a Nittany Lion. Whatever the case may be, nothing is harder than the moment your friends say goodbye and have to leave.
