Campus life at a college or university is a major aspect to consider when deciding which school is right for you. The day-to-day routines, activities, and club events all play an important role in the "college experience". Another thing that adds to the whole experience is whether or not students have the opportunity to practice religion. Here are some tell-tale signs that you attend a Catholic institution:
1. You spot nuns and priests EVERYWHERE.
The nuns and priests seen around campus usually travel in groups and can even be seen from distances. Sometimes you'll see them at the table next to you in the dining hall and you're guaranteed a smile and greeting from them.
2. There is a crucifix in every classroom.
It does not matter which building, nine times out of ten there will be a crucifix in every classroom you are in. Just know that someone is always watching over...
3. Religion courses are part of the General Education requirement.
Unlike other institutions, some religion courses are actually required. Some example courses are Death and the Afterlife, Parables of Jesus, Contemporary Jesus, and Jesus and His Gospels, just to name a few.
4. There is a chapel connected to the freshmen dorm
This chapel is actually connected to Loughran Hall, which is a freshmen only dorm at Marywood University (where I attend). It is within 100 feet and is super convenient for anyone practicing Catholicism here on campus.
5. Many professors have the title "Sister" or "Father", and they pray before class.
Make sure to address them this way, too. A little prayer to start your day never hurt anybody, especially during midterms and finals.
6. Community service comes first.
Service is not just the Catholic mission, but is a human mission. Devoting time to others can really change someone's outlook on life and gain a new perspective.
7. Retreat opportunities are often.
There are five different programs that a student can join to go on retreat trips to learn more about oneself spiritually. Many people can find out more about themselves and can create relationships with others on the retreat.
8. The mission page states that the school, "roots itself in the Catholic intellectual tradition..."
Catholicism may not be enforced on campus, but it is certainly encouraged and incorporated into the lifestyle. Frequent masses, an opening liturgy, and more opportunities to practice are given to students. Even a trip to see the Pope was offered!
9. One of the school's core values is "Catholic Identity".
The freshman seminar class consists of studying and understanding all of the core values, which includes Catholic Identity. Required readings also include faith based stories and experiences.
10. There is a nun cemetery right on campus.
As if being told that certain buildings on campus are haunted and ghosts roam the hallways wasn't enough, there is a fenced in cemetery in walking distance from your dorm.
11. Your school was established 100 years ago by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Do I even have to explain this one?
