11 Reasons You Need TheSkimm

What’s not to love about a more educated, informed, and involved society? That seems to be the mission of two young CEO’s with their launch of a new service just four years ago. Today, theSkimm has grown to be a huge and successful company with just more and more room to grow. Haven’t heard of theSkimm? Here’s the rundown:

It is basically a free email subscription that I get every morning and they aggregate all of the news that happened in the past 24 hours into a digestible and easy-to-read way. The short email takes about five minutes to read, but there are tons of links to click on in order to get more information on the topics you’re more interested in! They are a pretty new company and their expansion plans look awesome. It’s completely changed my interest in news and current events. I say, it is a must subscribe for anyone at any age, trying to keep up-to-date on trends while juggling a busy life. I highly suggest giving it a try, and here’s why.

1. It keeps you informed

As a college student, it’s easy to miss out on what’s happening in the world when you’re focused on passing your classes, keeping up with friends, and working to pay off your student loans. TheSkimm delivers everything you need to know to have a grown-up conversation to your inbox every single morning.

2. It is quick

This is probably my favorite thing. Most people don’t have time to sit down for two hours every night to tune in to the News and get the info on what’s happening in the world. Thankfully, this quick morning read takes only about five minutes to digest, and I can read it while brushing my teeth and making coffee.

3. It is funny

TheSkimm writers aren’t messing around. They know that humor holds attention spans, so they intersperse hard facts with a conversational and humorous writing style. I sometimes find myself laughing at their bold and original approach to reporting the most boring of world events.

4. They’re non-partisan

An important factor for many people today is an un-biased media. From where I stand, theSkimm writers have hit this nail on the head. They’re purely reporters taking what’s being talked about and writing it in a summary for the people. They don’t support either political party, so that’s a win for many people.

5. They’re a new company

TheSkimm was launched in 2012, which means they’re only four years old. This means they are dedicated to trying new things and delivering their best everyday. Sure, it means that sometimes they might make mistakes, but it’s really cool to be a part of watching a young company grow.

6. It was created by women

I think I automatically give applause whenever I hear about such a successful endeavor by women. Not to bash men, but it’s inspiring for young girls to hear about women doing successful things to change the world. That’s something I can always get behind.

7. It is a starting point

They don’t claim to be an end-all, be-all for the source of news. They simply summarize the news. But, they encourage readers to engage further by providing links to the original stories and making sure readers know that they can always submit news on anything that was missed from the newsletter.

8. It is easy to read and understand

I get frustrated when media uses unnecessary jargon and explanations and deters their audience. Media and news is something that everyone should have the right to have access to, so it’s important that news is reported in digestible ways.

9. They’re down-to-earth

The daily headlines of theSkimms usually go something along the lines of “Skimm’d over cereal dinner” or “Skimm’d with cocktails” or “Skimm’d after a cooking disaster.” They’re very personable and personal in their daily emails, connecting the audience with the reporters. They are also very active on social media--my favorite being following their Snapchat, because they show their daily antics in the office. (In fact, my question is--when do they get work done?)

10. They want people to be involved

Another thing I can appreciate in this company is that they seek to involve every reader in the process of being an informed citizen, but they want us to do more with it than just that. They have an entire section of their website dedicated to the 2016 Presidential Election & they are highly encouraging towards registering people to vote.

11. They’re forward thinking

Because they’re new, they’re always looking ahead. They’re always planning the next step for their company, by involving readers as Skimm’basadors, launching an app, and promoting reading. This company isn’t going to settle for mediocre and that’s a company that we all want to watch develop.

If you’re ready to watch a company grow and develop while getting an awesome daily email service, subscribe to theSkimm today. Then sit back, relax, and watch them take on the world.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
