11 Reasons To Go See The Color Purple

On September 30th, I was very lucky to have been able to go see The Color Purple on Broadway for free with my school. I generally knew the plot going into seeing the show, but was really more excited to hear the angelic voices of Cynthia Erivo, Heather Headley, Danielle Brooks, and the rest of the talented cast. Not only was the show moving and powerful, but the themes portrayed in the musical are something we should not overlook simply because we are left speechless by Cynthia singing her heart out. Here are 11 reasons why you need to go see The Color Purple Broadway Revival right now.

1. Cynthia Erivo. (Need I say more?)

2. Heather Headley. The queen, still killing it.

3. Danielle Brooks. Yes, Tasha "Taystee" Jefferson from Orange Is The New Black. What a Broadway debut.

4. The rest of the powerhouse cast. We had three monster performances mentioned above, but everyone else was so amazing on top of those that the whole show was just - wow! Special shoutouts to great performances by Isaiah Johnson as Mister and Kyle Scatliffe as Harpo.

5. The story. Celie's journey inspires us to remember to always look for the little good things, even when there is so much bad around us.

6. It stayed very close to the book. The story is very close, with little condensation, extrapolation, or fabrication. The signs of a wonderful adaptation.

7. The important topics of domestic violence, gender rights, and oppression. This is a big one, folks. Celie, as well as the other women in the show, are subjects of beating and mistreatment, as was the custom of the time period. Sofia is one of the first to really show the fire to fight back, helping Celie and other find the power to do the same. Celie's colorful pants also helped solidify the idea that woman could "wear the pants" too. The Color Purple reminds us that everyone deserves equal treatment, and you should never put up with anything less.

8. The set. Simply done, the one-form set is a perfect backdrop for the whole show, and the use of chairs as props for every scene was an interesting, but well-done choice.

9. The attitude. This musical had A LOT of it, and it was the main source of comedic relief here, thanks mainly to Sofia and the three gossiping women who frequently threw in their two cents.

10. The music. The titanic voices of the whole cast really carried the show, but the music behind them, as well as the brief sound effects, really made it feel complete.

11.Do you want to cry? Because there is a 110% chance you will.

The show was truly a wonderful and moving experience and should not be missed. Plus, you might get to meet them at stage door afterwards like I did!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
