There have been plenty of movies based on our favorite video games. Even though most of them have sucked, we still hold out for the possibility of someone making a good video game movie. Despite previous disasters (like the “Super Mario Bros.” movie), Hollywood producers are still encouraging Nintendo to put their beloved characters on the big screen again. Producer Roy Lee even described Nintendo as his “holy grail” for film-making.
Even aside from Nintendo, there are some other games out there that would make great movies. Here are 11 franchises outside of Nintendo that should be adapted into movies.
1. “The Sims”
A simple game with so much potential – given the sadistic nature of many “Sims” players, this would work best as a horror movie, but filmmakers could showcase some of the silly aspects of “The Sims,” in addition to the different ways to kill them. College Humor even made a trailer of what a “Sims” movie would look like – check it out here.
2. “Mega Man”
He’s already taken the first step back into the spotlight by appearing in “Super Smash Bros." for Wii U and 3DS, and Capcom can keep the momentum going with Mega Man by sending him to the silver screen. Just keep it to a cartoon, though – live action would be pretty cringe worthy here.
3. “Castlevania”
One project was already canceled due to complications, but it’d definitely be worth it to work out the rights issue and try again. Simon Belmont is a fairly popular character and a great hero to be showcased on the big screen. Hopefully the vampire craze spawned by “Twilight” didn’t kill it.
4. “Grand Theft Auto”
A film adaptation of “Grand Theft Auto” could go in multiple directions. It could be an action, “Fast and Furious”-type film with gunshots, explosions and other badass stuff. Or it could be a goofy comedy based on all the stupid things players can do in the game. Either one could work.
5. “Kingdom Hearts”
This one is a personal pick, but “Kingdom Hearts” would make a great movie – if producers can work out the rights with Disney (probably not). “Kingdom Hearts” would probably need multiple movies because there’s a lot of story to tell, but as long as they’re done right, fans won’t be complaining.
6. “Crash Bandicoot”
Sony recently teased the possible return of “Crash Bandicoot” – is this what Sony was talking about? Probably not, but it would be a nice idea. “Crash Bandicoot” was popular with many of today’s twenty-somethings during their childhoods, so the idea of a film adaptation of the series shouldn’t be too far-fetched.
7. “League of Legends”
“League of Legends” is very popular at the moment in the e-sports scene, so now would be a good time to cash in on that. Not only that, though; “League” has a ton of backstory and other lore that players always skip over. Maybe they’ll at least watch the movie.
8. “NiGHTS”
Sega may only mostly be known for Sonic, but “NiGHTS” was a good game and would make for a good movie. A movie where a gender-less Nightmaren flies through teenage dreams – it would be like “Inception,” except that people would actually understand what’s going on. I’d pay to see it.
9. “Touhou Project”
This project may seem daunting with so many games, but at least there’s plenty of material to work with. With a female-dominated cast of characters, this would be great for bringing women to the cinematic forefront in a world where men dominate the movies. Plus, the soundtrack would be amazing!
10. “Amnesia: The Dark Descent”
For anyone who thought “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was scary – you don’t know true fear until you play this game. Back in 2010, gamers were watching Let’s Plays of people shrieking in terror while playing “Amnesia.” If any other horror game is going to be adapted into a film, it should be this one.
11. “RollerCoaster Tycoon”
This is obviously a joke pick, but it would be pretty funny to see as an actual movie. This could be made as one of those underdog business movies (think “Tommy Boy” or “The Goods”) where the protagonist has to save their business from being taken over by some greedy corporate tool.
