During my first semester of college, I joined NYU's student-run college radio station, WNYU. I didn't think much beyond the fact I wanted to explore another facet of journalism. A year and a half later, it's hard to image my life without it (and that's not just because I spend 85 percent of my time there). There's a lot to love about college radio, but here are some of the first things that come to my mind.
1. Exposure to new music.
Working in a radio station gives you a plethora of records and CDs right at your fingertips. Plus, just sitting around the studio exposes you to all of the tunes DJs play on their shows. Nearly every day you'll find a new track or artist that interests you.
2. Learning about new technology and software.
When I joined WNYU, I knew next to nothing about sound editing and recording. Now, I find myself producing two shows a week. It's also an interesting skill for your resumé.
3. Meeting a variety of new people.
In the news department, I've had an opportunity to interview everyone from a marijuana activist to a The New York Times editor. You're constantly making connections with an expansive variety of individuals.
4. Having a professional email address.
Good or bad, it's a lot easier to get an interview with someone when you have an email @some-specific-media-outlet.org.
5. Being part of a super cool history.
The Flamings Lips, U2, and Sonic Youth are just some groups who have all made an appearance (all past interviews can be found in the Soundcloud archives).
6. Creating really great content.
Whether it's a killer set or an interesting talk show, it's really rewarding to look at the audio file you've created and know other people are listening to it around the world.
7. Experiencing wacky things.
This is most likely true of all facets of college, but still, everything from random items showing up on the table to Google Chrome tabs open to any number of odd subjects (if you're smart, search incognito) happens. And of course, it's always fun seeing to what someone's changed the desktop wallpapers. Sean Kington's Take You There was the most recent choice.8. Getting paid to do "work."
As a member of management, we do receive small stipends for our work keeping the station running and on check. However, admittedly, everything I do at WNYU is more fun than stressful.
9. Going to fun events/parties.
From kickball games to Secret Santa exchanges, the community is always planning something fun for everyone to participate in.
10. Hearing your voice over the airwaves.
It's freaky at first, but then you get over it and realize it's actually super cool.
11. Befriending some amazing people.
^^ That's how I've felt about most everyone I've met working at WNYU. ^^
So, if you're heading into this spring semester and feeling nervous because you haven't found your "micro-community" yet, maybe consider joining your campus's station. I know WNYU is looking for cool cats to come join us in music and news.
