If you're not from the States, your first American Thanksgiving experience goes something like this.

Turkey. That’s probably the first and only thing that would ever pop up in our minds when it comes to Thanksgiving. As two international students, we had no idea Thanksgiving was a thing before coming to the States, not to mention to be prepared to even leave campus on the week-long holiday. Here are the 11thoughts we have when people ask for our Thanksgiving plans while home is 30,000+ miles away. *insert upside-down smiley emoji*

1. TF is Thanksgiving?

2. I wasn’t aware that Americans were a population of extremely grateful people.

3. Do turkeys symbolize thanks? Is it a sacrificial thing?

4. What’s the Turkey Dump? Is that just a euphemism for turkey poop? Is that also a symbol for gratitude?

5. Native Americans? Did they start this? No? Americans started it? What….?

6. WTF the entire school is actually shut down during Thanksgiving?!

I thought it was just a normal holiday...like Veteran’s Day or Columbus Day. Dewick’s not open, Carm’s not open, Campus Center’s not open, and worst of all, literally NO ONE is staying on campus. Am I going to have the whole Houston hall alone? That’s actually really creepy.

7. Where should I go now for Thanksgiving…

Now is the moment you curse at yourself for not having enough international friends, but trips to anywhere are pricey as hell! Would it be awkward if I ask my passive aggressive roommate if she could take me home for Thanksgiving? Sorry not sorry I’m desperate.

8. What’s the Black Friday Sale? Why isn’t it on a 13th? Why are people so crazy about it?

I thought Black Friday was on a 13th? Wow people actually hit the mall in the middle of the night for this? This is insane! It’s like "Confessions of a Shopaholic." Americans…

9. Everyone is Instagramming Thanksgiving dinner

What even is a typical Thanksgiving dinner? Literally all I know is a turkey. I don’t even know that there are different ways to cook it. And pumpkin pie?! Damn, I wish I had an American family. Somebody adopt me please!

10. I just want this break to end so my friends are back again...

11. How much longer do I have to be alone here?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
