At the start of school, at least as long as syllabus week lasts, some people actually make a point of trying to dress to impress. Personally, I always make this promise to myself on Sunday night but come Monday morning, I couldn't care less. There's been a lot of discussion recently regarding what is appropriate attire for a college campus. Ladies, Nike Shorts And Leggings Are For The Gym, Nowhere Else especially got a lot of backlashes, as well as a few of the many responses. While there's a definite need to dress appropriately for school, making an entrance isn't the goal. There are things way more important than what you wear to class, and here's just a few:
1. Paying attention
I see it all the time, and I admit I'm guilty sometimes too. You came to learn, and you're not learning effectively if you're on Snapchat.
2. Staying awake in class
Along the same lines, make an effort to absorb as much information as you can. It's your professor's job to teach you and your job as a student to learn. But that said...
3. Getting enough sleep
Balance is important, and you can stay up all night studying and likely fail anyway, or you can give your brain and body the time it needs to recuperate.
4. Exercising
Probably the source of some of the attire debate. If you come from the gym, should you shower and change first or book it to anthropology? Either way, make some time to sweat during your week. You'll feel better and beat the freshman (or senior) 15.
5. Keeping up with assignments
Honestly, guys, if you're falling behind before the second week, maybe you need to rethink
6. Eating right
Whether or not eating in class is acceptable is another debate I probably just sparked, but no matter where you eat, make sure it's nutritious and filling.
7. Getting to know instructors
Even if you're positive you'll never ask them for a recommendation letter, they have lots of information to share and want to get to know you. Take some initiative and stop by office hours.
8. Making time for friends
You're all busy and everyone's schedule is crazy, but let them know that you care and enjoy their company.
9. Enjoying your free time responsibly
If you don't go out, that's fine. If you do go out on occasion, that's fine too. If you go out every weekend, but it doesn't get in the way of school work, that's awesome and please tell me your secrets. If you go out more than anything else and it's not working out, make a change.
10. Actually going to class
No matter what you're wearing, get your butt to class. Tuition is expensive, make it worthwhile.
11. Feeling comfortable in your own skin
No matter what you wear to class, wear it with confidence. You are perfect just the way you are, don't hide it.
A lot of people have a lot of opinions about what's appropriate to wear to class. The answer probably lies somewhere in the middle, but what's even more important is taking care of your body and getting that higher level education.
