August 25, 2018 was the beginning of a devastating time for Texas.
Hurricane Harvey hit the Eastern coast of the Lone Star State, ruining homes in Corpus Christi, Rockport, Port Aransas, and our beloved city of Houston.
The tag #HoustonStrong was made up, and it's become an icon for the event.
As expected, this tag made its rounds on every form of social media, and celebrities across the country have taken note of it. Using their status, fame and fortune, they've donated time, resources and money to the cause of rebuilding these cities, and sheltering these citizens.
I've compiled a list of celebrities and organizations who have shown compassion for the residents of the damaged areas.
1. H-E-B
The grocery chain that was founded in San Antonio was one of the first to respond to the tragedy, opening doors across the state to those in need. With providing shelter, they also sent out trucks to deliver food and water to victims of the storm.
2. Kevin Hart
Mr. Hart issued a challenge to his celebrity friends to follow his lead and donate $25 thousand to The Red Cross in response to the effects of Hurricane Harvey. Many have decided to follow his example and have donated as well.
3. Ellen DeGeneres
America's favorite talk show host (De)generously donated $25 thousand to The Red Cross, her show matched that in donations to The Red Cross, and she also donated $25 thousand to the SPCA of Texas.
4. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
Dwayne Johnson donated his $25 thousand The Red Cross, as well as his companies. With that, he sent out a reminder to others that they can also donate to help out, and provided a link for them to do so.
5. Chris Brown
Chris Brown took up Hart's challenge and went above and beyond to donate $100 thousand dollars to the cause.
6. JJ Watt
The football star opened his own fundraiser and began with a goal of $1.5 million. His fans and supporters crushed that goal with no problem, so he soon raised it to $2 million.
7. Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez
The superstar couple each made plans to donate $25 thousand to the Red Cross in support.
8. DJ Khaled
The producer and rapper announced that he was planning on participating in Hart's challenge and donated $25 thousand in response.
9. Jack Antonoff
The former Fun. musician pledged to match donations up to $10 thousand to the Montrose LGBT center in Houston, with copies of receipts.
10. Lady Antebellum
The band agreed to send all of the proceeds from sold merchandise at their show in Dallas to help out in Houston, after having to cancel a concert on behalf of Harvey.
11. Ruby Rose
The "Orange Is The New Black" star pledged to match Antonoff's donation and donated $10 thousand more to Houston's local LGBT center.
Bonus: Coldplay
The English band was set to perform on the night of Friday, August 25 in Houston. The show was canceled, however, due to the storms rolling in that night. They were devastated to hear of the tragedy and wrote a song for Houston that they performed at their show in Miami a couple nights later.
Here's the song, titled "Houston."
Altogether, businesses donated over $72 million to hurricane relief in Houston. This tragedy pulled our country together despite past issues and differences, all to help each other through this terrible time. We truly are #HoustonStrong.
