Ah, college... There's nothing like having hundreds of mini mental breakdowns and consuming gross amounts of late-night carbs. From the regrets, the lessons, and the memories, your freshman year will always hold a special place in your heart. With that in mind, it definitely wasn't easy, and I can guarantee you learned these following 10 lessons along the way.
1. 8 A.M. classes are never a good idea. Ever.
You're going to think that you'll be fine with an 8 A.M class because you're used to getting up way earlier for high school. You're wrong. College is an entirely different animal, and odds are that you're probably going to want to go out on the weekdays. Your professor definitely doesn't want to see last night's makeup or smell your beer breath, so do yourself a favor and don't even think about it.
2. If there's free food, go.
Food is a precious commodity, especially to college students. Even with access to a dining hall, never turn down an opportunity to snag some free grub (even if you have to attend some stupid program or event). Your bank account will thank you.
3. You're not going to get along with everyone.
One of the coolest things about college is that you are exposed to so many different types of people and mindsets. With that said, not everyone is going to rub you the right way. That's fine, and frankly, totally normal. Just mind your business and you'll be fine.
4. The value of a dollar.
You will never appreciate a $20 bill more in your life than you will as a freshman in college. You suddenly realize all the stupid sh*t you spent money on in high school and regret not saving it.
5. Going out is an option every night of the week. Don't do it.
Tequila Tuesday? Wine Wednesday? Sound familiar? That's because only college kids participate in these kinds of degenerate activities, such as binge-drinking on a Tuesday. I'm not saying don't do it, just don't do it every night.
6. You will change your major, or at least consider changing it, at least once.
Cue the mental breakdowns. It's totally normal to completely reconsider or re-evaluate your major, because at the end of the day, you're still a teenager and this is a huge life decision not everyone is prepared to commit to yet.
7. Registration is similar to the "Hunger Games."
Plan accordingly prior to your school's registration dates. Find the classes you need to take, the right professor, and be the first to log on to the portal. College kids are savages. Don't mess with a determined student who needs a certain class.
8. You'll start to realize who your true friends are.
There's a huge difference between a drinking buddy and a real friend. Recognize the difference and treat the real people in your life with the love and respect they deserve. College is hard, but you don't have to do it alone. Odds are you will find your best friends for life during these four years.
9. You'll make a few mistakes. Some of them might have first and last names.
Turns out that Sig Ep pledge was way cuter the night before.
10. You're going to change. Embrace it.
You'll find as you get older that it becomes harder and harder to hide who you truly are. Break out of your shell and do what makes you happy. College is notoriously dubbed the "best years of your life," but that will never happen if you don't embrace change.
