10 Things You Wouldn't Know About Me; Because You Never Asked.

I'm pretty much an open book... if you ask that is.

Some people might call me an open book: I’m not shy to explain my confusing family tree to anyone. I don’t mind sharing my personal life experiences, if I feel comfortable. Some might think I’m very quiet and reserved. Others might think they know all there is to know about me. But there are little things that people don’t know about me! I’ve decided to make a list of interesting facts people may not know.

1. I have this undying urge to be liked

I get easily discouraged when I feel unwelcomed in a crowd. So much so that my hands begin to shake and my eyes swell with tears. Why am I like that? I’m not so sure. Maybe I’m narcissistic and believe that I should be liked simply because I’m nice to everyone. It's strange because I love to be left alone, I don’t mind not being talked to. But sometimes I just want people to notice me.

2. I am always lost in my thoughts

I swear I’m not ignoring you. I’m just thinking about that book I’ll never write. Or I’m living in the past. Or thinking about my future. I get so lost in my own mind I barely remember driving anywhere such as: driving from App State to my home in Hickory, nearly an hour away - who gave me a license?

3. I have serious body image issues

I’ve always pretended I was slim. That I looked good in a bathing suit or that I looked good in that one dress. In reality I don’t truly believe I do. I think my tummy is too big, sometimes I refrain from eating because of it. Sometimes I think my face is too round, my nose is too big, and that my chin is too fat. I’m working on myself - because I never thought people noticed I was slightly pudgy but apparently some people did. Nothing motivates you more than hearing others think you’re fat.

4. I do not believe I'm a good writer

I think I’m mediocre at best. I enjoy writing! And it’s such an honor to be writing for the Odyssey! But I don’t believe anyone would want to quote me. I don’t think anyone would buy that book I’ll never write.

5. I am the lightest sleeper known to man.

There’s nothing I hate more than being woken up by some kind of noise - no matter how small. It’s a curse. Especially when you live in a dorm or apartment.

6. I am very good at finding deals

Every time I go shopping I usually save some sort of money. I don’t buy clothes as often as I used to - literally I wear the same outfits all the time. Now when I do I usually take advantage of sales and save anywhere between $70 and $200.

7. I absolutely love Anne Boleyn

Anne was the second wife of King Henry VIII of England. He ended up beheading her on trumped of charges of adultery and incest - none of which were true. I think the best actress who has ever portrayed Anne Boleyn is Natalie Dormer is the Showtime hit "The Tudors". My dream is to star in a TV Show or Movie as Anne, I only hope I'd do her justice. She’s a very interesting historical figure. I’d go so far as to say she’s one of my idols. I feel very close to her - like creepy close. Maybe I was her in a past life?

8. I once had a blog with over 10,000 followers.

To this day I brag about that. It was a blog dedicated to the British boy band One Direction - I know you’re laughing at me right now. But I had such a supportive fan base, they all believed I was destined to date and marry Liam Payne. Our couple name was “Chiam”. Those were good times. What happened to the blog you ask? I started dating my current boyfriend and all thoughts of One Direction went out the window! But don't be fooled... there's still this secret part of my heart that fangirls over my favorite boy band.

9. I hate sweet candies/food

Don’t get me wrong. I’ll eat them. But I prefer salty or sour foods. If things are too sweet my face will twitch and my teeth hurt! There are times when all I want is a candy bar, but that candy bar betrays me and my face gets contorted and my teeth scream out in pain. I promise I don't have any cavities! I guess I have an anti-sweet tooth.

10. I am SO proud of myself

I know I mentioned I have body issues but I’m so proud of who I am and where I’ve come from. I’m proud to be attending Appalachian State, I’m proud to be an English Major, I’m proud of everything I have and will accomplish.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
