There are a lot of people who have insomnia from time to time; it’s a relatively common thing to have. It can be caused by stress, anxiety, depression, not eating right, and many other reasons. I have a lot of trouble sleeping and have had many spouts of insomnia over the last few years. As a result, I’ve come up with few ways to help people fall asleep.
1. Set A Routine For Your Sleep Cycle
Get up at the same time and go to bed at the same time every day. It sets a routine for your body and can prevent a sleepless night to begin with.
2. Work Out Every Day
Especially in the mornings or early afternoons, it gives you energy for the day and tires your body out by the time you go to bed. Running is especially helpful for tiring yourself out.
3. Use Essential Oils
I use a mix of ‘Calming Sleep’ and ‘Lavender’ oils in a hot bath to help a lot. They calm your mind, relax your muscles, and make you drowsier. It is really beneficial for a restful sleep if you do this before you go to bed.
4. Don’t Drink Caffeine After 1:00 p.m.
Really it is after 3:00 p.m. but I go with 1:00 p.m. to make sure I’m not going to be hyped up when I go to bed.
5. Eat Better
Believe it or not, whether you eat enough fruits and vegetables can affect how well you actually sleep. If someone eats a lot of junk food and sweats, it makes it more difficult to get a decent night of sleep.
6. Valerian Root
This is a dietary supplement anyone can buy for about $4.00 at Walmart. I love this because not only does it help you fall asleep but it also makes your sleep a lot more restful.
7. Melatonin
I like to take melatonin supplements because it is naturally produced in the body, but this should only be a temporary solution for insomnia. If you take it regularly then it hinders your body’s ability to produce it naturally, but it is good if you are just having an extremely tough time falling asleep.
8. Don’t Just Lay In Bed
If you don’t fall asleep after 20 minutes then get up and move around for a while. Doing something just helps to remind my body how tired I am.
9. Read A Book
Use dim lighting and read an actual book and not one on a screen. It gives your mind something to focus on.
10. Stay Away From Technology
Phones, tablets, iPads, and laptops are all distracting to me when I’m trying to sleep and keep me awake.
