One of the most difficult adjustments that comes with starting a new job is the fact that it takes quite a bit of time to develop strong and healthy relationships with each of your new managers and coworkers. Fortunately, I've managed to construct the following list of 10 simple changes that you can start implementing in order to gradually get your managers to see you as both a reliable employee and a good friend:
1. When they call you in to work, you had better come in to work.
Don't take a call from your managers for granted. After all, they must be in need of some serious help if they decide to call you in to work out of the blue. Show them that they can always trust you to help them out by going in to work even if you'd much rather prefer to have the day off.
2. Offer to cover someone else's shift whenever possible.
The more reliable you are, the more your managers will know that they can trust you to maintain the success of their company. Covering shifts will also demonstrate a sense of dedication on your part. Finally, your managers will also get to know more about who you are and why you're such a likable employee after all.
3. Don't try to act like someone you're not.
Please, just be you. Every good employee offers something different to the workplace, and if you're someone who constantly chooses to act like everyone else, then you're really not contributing anything different to the company.
4. Have fun with them every once in a while.
Managers have this tendency to be very conservative and stern with their employees, but if you can somehow find a way to get them to loosen up every once in a while (maybe with a joke or a handshake that only you and your managers know about), then you're sure to become someone they actually appreciate having around.
5. Accomplish your tasks both quickly and efficiently.
The more you're able to get tasks done and done well, the more likely the company is to stay on track with everything that they do. This, in turn, will make your managers more satisfied with having you around.
6. Try to keep your availability as conveniently open as possible.
This will also make you appear more reliable to your managers, in that they'll know they can easily rely on you for additional assistance.
Hint: NO ONE wants to work on the weekends. Use that fact to your advantage.
7. Even if your shift may be over, wait for your managers to tell you that you can leave for the day.
Quit asking them when you can leave for the day. It will just annoy them and you'll eventually be looked at as a pest. Don't worry, they won't keep you there any longer than what is necessary.
8. Ask them if they would like you to do anything else before you leave.
Even if everything is already taken care of, always ask your managers if they would like you to do anything else before you leave for the day. This will show a genuine sense of dedication and respect for the business on your part, and they'll surely appreciate it!
9. Always be a constant source of positivity.
Almost everyone is going to lose their patience at some point while they're working. However, it's important that you keep the good energy going by staying as positive as possible (even if you're on the verge of being completely done with everyone and everything). It's going to be difficult, but the fact that you have what it takes to stick it out through even the worst of times is what will make your managers want to have you around more often.
10. Be the missing link.
In other words, try to think of an area that others may be lacking in where you can be the superstar. Maybe it's conducting bathroom checks, restocking the cabinets, etc. Overall, try to think of something simple that no one else would really contemplate doing, and then take charge to get that particular task done on your own throughout your shift.
Getting your managers to like you will certainly take quite a bit of time, especially if you're a new employee. Don't be intimidated by the idea. I promise you, as soon as you start to implement the above changes, you'll be surprised at how quickly your managers grow to like you!
