According to Urban Dictionary, a Mom Friend is defined as, "That one friend in your squad that's super responsible and almost over-protective of them." Usually, every friend group has a mom friend, and if you think your squad doesn't have one, then you're probably the Mom Friend!
I know I’m a mom friend. All my friends know I’m the mom friend. If you’re confused about your status in your friend group, here are 10 ways to know you are, in fact, the mom friend.
1. You have a bag of tricks on you at all times.
This is something I picked up from my mom. I always have on hand a small bag of necessities full of things like tampons, band-aids, ibuprofen, nail clippers, cough drops, cold/allergy medicine depending on the season, hand-sanitizer, a mini leatherman, and a camping spork, among other misselenia. If you need it, chances are, I have it.
2. You always have a snack.
Granola bars, protein bars, trail mix, to-go peanut butter packets, candy: if somebody’s hungry, you have some solution.
3. The roof of your car is covered in sports buttons.
So you know those t-shirts that sports moms wear that say: “Some people wait their entire lives to meet their favorite player. I raised mine.” That’s you. You loudly and proudly attend your siblings/friends sports games and anybody who happens to ride in your vehicle will be met with an array of smiling, uniformed faces staring down at them.
4. You’re the #1 Fan.
Sports games aside, anytime one of your friends has an event, you’re there, in the front row, cheering them on.
5. “Text me when you get home!”
You’re a worrier. You can’t help it, you just like to know everyone is home safe.
6. “Call me if you need a ride.”
If your friends are going out downtown, chances are you’ll be happy staying in binge-watching your latest fav on Netflix, waiting for your phone to ring with a request to come pick them up.
7. “Have you eaten today?”
No? Well, no wonder you’re crabby. Here, have one of the snacks that I’m definitely carrying in my bag.
8. “Get some good rest.”
Sleeping is like the turn-it-off-and-back-on-again for a human being. This specific phrase I almost definitely picked up from my mom, but there’s a difference between good rest and just sleeping. Good rest means you’ve turned off/silenced your phone and left it face down on your desk so you don’t have blue light bothering your eyeballs. It means putting all your troubles/worries/annoyances away and getting into bed at a reasonable hour and drifting off to dreamland so you can wake up feeling well rested.
9. “Do you have your … ?”
Keys, wallet, ID, coat, purse, jacket, leftovers, phone, whatever. Whether leaving home or heading home, you make sure everybody has what they need and leaves with what they came.
10. “Sure, I’ll help you!”
With your homework, with your resume, with your resignation letter, with moving. I’d be happy to do it, as a matter of fact.
There you have it. The next time you question your role in your friend group, refer to this handy guide and know that if you do one or more of these things on a regular basis, you’re probably the mom friend.
