Bun?
Check.
Hotdog?
Yes.
Put a creative spin on it to make it my own?
Absolutely.
Just like the way we add different toppings to our pizza, we also customize our hotdogs to our liking. While I usually stick to the traditional style of a wiener, hotdog bun, and the condiments (of ketchup, mustard, onions, or relish), some take a step further and add their own flare to the hotdog. So next time decide to add some pizzazz to your hotdog, try these ideas below (with attached recipe links to the titles):
1. Mexican Style Hotdog (Recommended by my friend Elizabeth Real)
There are other versions of this hotdog. My friend Elizabeth Real described it as taking a smoked sausage wrapping it in bacon (grill it). Then spreading mayo on the toasted hotdog bun, placing the bacon-wrapped sausage in the bun and garnishing it with mustard, ketchup and sometimes spreading mayo on top of that. In other cases, the Mexican hotdog can include a different sauce spread on the bun.
2. Chicago Style Hot Dog
The hotdog where ketchup is simply not allowed to be on it. The best place to try this (or a similar version without the tomatoes) Chicago Style Hotdog with fries added on top of it as Gene and Jude's.
3. Seattle Style Hot Dog
I'm a little skeptical on the cream cheese for this hot dog, but it's definitely on my list of hot dogs to try.
4. New York Style Dog
A hot dog topped with sauerkraut and spicy brown mustard.
5. Kansas City Hot Dog
A hot dog with shredded pork and smothered in barbecue sauce.
6. Detroit Coney Dog (Michigan Style Hot Dog)
7. Chilean Style Hot Dog (with Avocado Relish) (Chile Style Hot Dog)
8. The Kimchi Dog (Cleveland Style Hot Dog) (with Coleslaw)
9. Greek Style Hot Dog (with olives and sprinkled Feta Cheese)
10. Doyer Dog (L.A. style Hot Dog)
A hotdog topped with jalapeño peppers, sour cream, and nacho cheese.
Everyone has their own interpretation of what their hot dog is going to have. Next time, try these recipes (or other recipes) when making these hotdogs, or put your own spin on it.
