10 Truths I Have Learned About The World
Max Rive

Nearing the conclusion of my second year of college, I have been thinking about where I am compared to where I was. I have been thinking about how far I have come and how much I have learned. I realize I have learned a lot, not just academically, although I find myself to be far more intelligent than I was in high school, but I have learned a lot about the things that truly matter. I have learned a lot about reality, people, change, distance and myself. I have learned a lot about how the world works and I have compiled a list of the things that have helped me understand why the world is the way it is. Perhaps this will help you too.

1. Change is inevitable

This is common knowledge by now, but change isn’t always bad. You cannot stop change, but you can decide if you’re going to change for better or worse.

2. Humans are fallible

We all make mistakes because we are human. Choose the battles and grudges you want to hold, but don’t make a big deal out of small mistakes.

3. Do what makes you happy

Do not model your days around other people’s happiness. Be selfish sometimes and do what you want to do and be the person you want to be. You will never please everyone, at least please yourself.

4. Stop striving for perfection

Perfection is impossible. Don’t set your goals at perfect, instead set them at better. Strive to improve, not for perfection because improvement can be achieved, perfection cannot.

5. Be your own hero

There are lots of great people out there doing great things for others without recognition or reward, which is great. But not everyone is filled with such greatness. Sometimes you have to be your own hero because, while others can cheer you on, only you can lift yourself up and achieve your dreams.

6. Speak up

Think first, but speak up. Nobody can read your mind; therefore, nobody can flourish from your ideas if you keep them to yourself. Staying silent is an injustice to the world.

7. Be honest

Lying and sugar coating helps no one. People will judge you regardless, so you might as well be truthful. The truth can hurt, but in the long run, it is better to be hit by the truth from the start than waste years running from a lie.

8. Be grateful

We all have bad days, grumpy moods, sad times, but at the end of the day, if you are still breathing, then you made it. Take a deep breath, prop your feet up, treat yourself. Be grateful for the time you have as well as the people and possessions you have.

9. Don’t be controlled by fear

Nobody is truly fearless. Do not be afraid to be afraid. More importantly, do not be afraid of your weaknesses. Recognize them, acknowledge them, but don’t allow them to destroy you. We all have our kryptonite, but only you have the power to allow it to affect you.

10. Live and love

Remind yourself every single day to live life. Whatever that means to you, do it, regardless of circumstance. Love deeply and fully and tell those you love that you love them.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
